QB/ATH Russell Shepard committed to LSU

Re: QB/ATH Russell Shepard named LSU as his favorite

They will be beaten because both schools will have very small classes this year. Between 15-17 for UGA and between 18-22 for LSU.

That's what I was thinking. No one is going to finish #1 in recruiting rankings signing between 16-22 prospects, and Alabama, Georgia, and LSU all look to be in that boat.

USC in 2005 would be a great example of that. That year they signed only 16 players -- six of them were five stars, eight of them were four stars, and they finished about a mile ahead of everyone else in average star rating -- but only finished sixth in the country in Scout.com recruiting rankings. You don't necessarily have to sign a big class to finish #1, but you can't sign a small class and be #1.

I think Florida will have a huge year, and Tennessee will bounce back in a big way too. Tennessee signed only 18 players last year, so they should be due for a big class again. And you know Florida will sign a ton of top talent, and considering their 2008 class was kind of small, they will likely sign another big class too.

Re: QB/ATH Russell Shepard named LSU as his favorite

LSU won't be able to sign all the top talent in the state next year because of scholly limits. Saban will probably pick up some fine players from the state LA in 09 along with the top talent in Alabama. It appears (from the 08 class) that he's beginning to "lock down" the state of Alabama.

ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!

That's not going to happen, for the most part. LSU won't be able to sign all of the top talent, to be sure, but we are pretty limited on scholarships too. We will have a relatively small class just like they will. We won't have the numbers to go there and get a bunch of guys that they couldn't get because of space issues. We basically have the same space issues that LSU does.

We'll probably get a guy, maybe two, out of Louisiana, but that will be it. We'll probably get 10-13 of Alabama's top players, and then a couple each out of Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, and maybe one out of Louisiana, and that'll be it. That would put us around 19-22 signees, and that is about how many we are expected to sign.

I think you do have a point though about LSU not having the space needed to sign all of that top talent. In a way, they are unlucky in the sense that they can only bring in a relatively small class in a huge year for in-state talent. We were very lucky last year to be able to bring in a huge class when it was a fabulous year for in-state talent. LSU will still get most of the top talent out of Louisiana, of course, just like we will out of Alabama, but there is probably going to be a pretty good number of kids in-state that they would love to have but simply do not have space for. I think they will probably have to pass up a fair amount of in-state kids that in most other years they would have loved to have had. If LSU really had room for a big class, combined with all of the talent coming out of that state this year, I think they would have the unanimous number one class in the country, but with the space limitations, I just don't see that happening.

Even if that were the case, we would only have a top five class because USC's class might be their best ever and Texas has a really nice class. This isn't so much about your point as it is about how sick USC's class will be.

Re: QB/ATH Russell Shepard named LSU as his favorite

Your right BET, Ha BET, okay okay, you are right in the USC west coast class. I hope if and when we have the smaller class we can sign five or six 5 stars and the rest be 4 stars. But, one never knows anymore with the size of a class. Just look at our class this year we were only able to take so many not sure but I think we had less than 20 to give, and the talk was all about getting the 25, we got 30 (2 back counters). So, next year with the LSwhos and UGAs one would think they would have a small class but they might over sign. Also, not sure on the grade issues of the players in LA. they might all be signs and several might be a sign and place. I hope all have good grades/scores and this would help us and other schools to pull a few if Lswho can only take so many.

True. That USC class is going to be ungodly. With all of the talent they have, they should be able to check out a chimp from the LA zoo and end up with a ring. When I say number one class in the country, mind you, I mean this side of USC. Their recruiting us so unreal that about the only way you can beat them is if they sign a small class. Being brutally honest, in the recruiting world, there is USC and then there is everyone else.

On us, that's technically true, but our situation was far from the norm. We had a couple of spots open for back-counters, had several medical scholarship casualties and also a good bit of other attrition looming, all of which the staff fully expected and planned for accordingly. That allowed us to sign a huge class without actually having that big of a senior class leaving. Going forward, you really just cannot count on that happening. It's really rare to have a scenario like that, far from the norm.

And you are right, Georgia and LSU may over-sign, but it won't be by a whole lot. You can only over-sign by so much, unless you are signing a bunch of dummies who will be academic casualties. I'd bet good money that either Miles or Richt will allow that to happen. I'm sure they'll over-sign by enough such that when the academic casualties are factored out that they will still be at their scholarship limit, but that will be the extent of it.

USC recruits great, I'd put Florida in their class too, they've been pretty spectacular the past few years under Meyer. And I don't think they're gonna have a big class next year either, in fact I hear it will be even less than this year's class. They signed a lot in 06 and 07.

As for us, I think we'll get in atleast 20, but probably up to 23. I think we're gonna have quite a few transfers and maybe possibly kickoffs and medical schollys. Every coach that comes to a new program has a cleaning process and Saban took the wait and see method and now is the time. I would not be too surprised if we were able to get 23-25 without even oversigning. I think quite a few guys will be gone and Saban is gonna go for getting his guys in the program with his 3rd class and go for it in 09 and most certainly have them ready by 2010.

And I think its certainly possible to be the top class with a 20-22 signee class. I mean ND and Florida were there right behind us with pretty much 22.

LSU had a similar issue (scholly room) in CLM's first year. We only took 13 players...but the avg star rating was great. This class won't be nearly that small. I agree with others that we'll sign between 18-22 players...and so far...so good.

I'm a little surprised that a couple of the commits that we've already gotten are from out of state...considering that LA is pretty loaded this year. Getting Micheal Ford is huge...but it looks as though we aren't even going after Lacy, who is at LEAST as good as Ford. He has grade issues...and apparently character issues, so they just aren't taking the chance, I guess. It's nice to be in a position where we don't have to take a chance on a kid that's risky to qualify and stay out of trouble...as the schollies are limited...and we already have Ford committed.

Am I lost??? I thought this was a Bama Recruiting Board.

the topic has to do with LSU and Russell Shepard. It is pertinent to the board in only the topic and it was started by a Bama fan. I was only updating the situation.

Russell Shepard is one of the top Athletic QBs in the country. He had a Bama offer and he was being discussed in this thread. The report of his commitment to LSU is very appropriate for this thread.

Thanks lsufan10 for the update. The girlfriend already at LSU was too much for any other school to really get a serious look. Good pick-up for LSU.

It looks like that LSU is not sliding into mediocrity under Miles as fast as people thought. Now that Les is going to be coaching HIS players, I think that we'll be just fine. :)

Out of 7 commitments so far, we have two 5 stars and an average star rating of 4.00. And, we are just getting started. I wish we didn't have to take a small class (around 20-22 players). This is getting ridiculous. Texas fans are having heart attacks right now.

Sorry guys, but living in Alabama, I have heard consistently from Bama fans that Miles is an idiot and is only winning because of Saban's players. Hopefully, that kind of talk will begin to die and we can get on with respecting each other and giving credit where it is due.

Now, flame away!

No flames here, only congrats to LSU and CLM for getting off to a great start for the 2009 class. Hopefully Bama can continue the success from the 2008 class and add some top rated commits to get in the running with LSU for the top 2009 recruiting class.

Props man! It's gonna suck havin to play that kid every year tho. Here's to having that LSU/Bama game having high stakes in the SEC and National championship race every year from now on!!

Man, I did not want to see this kid in the SEC! He looks like an improved Periloux unfortunately. It's a long way to signing day, and hopefully Mac Brown can work some magic and get him to Austin. He is a stud. Looks like CLM just keeps chugging along.

And me living in Louisiana I could fill this entire board up with idiotic comments and thought processes I've heard come out of LSU fan's mouth but I'll spare everybody with the stupidity. I wish you would do the same.

Last time I looked I-10 East was open. Use it if you can't stand Louisiana. Until then get used to hearing about LSU in Louisiana. I'm sure its the same in Bama for LA people living there.

And last time I looked this is a bama board. And by the way scooter, no one said anything about me "can't standing Louisiana." You just made that up yourself. Now go stand by I-10 east and make sure it stays open.
