Could be a lot worse - you could have Kenny Hill at QB. He absolutely refuses to give the ball to his RBs.

What's really funny is that there really won't be a quarterback competition next year.

I'm sure Saban will look at Tua. But we all know how that would turn out in reality. Which is seemingly why many of you are so bothered
I think most feel there will be a competition otherwise the thread would not have grown to this size, but if Coach Saban's only concern is to avoid turnovers at all costs then you might be right.

The other thing is that IF Jalen has any aspirations of playing in the NFL, hopefully someone will convince him to switch to RB, Slot receiver, or safety. Unless something dramatic happens, he is not going to play in the NFL as a QB. He is nowhere near close to NFL passer ability right now. The nightmare scenario is if a talent like Tua transfers knowing he has to sit for 2 more years behind JH. Then we're really screwed unless we can bring in a very good JUCO QB.

I am just saying if he isn’t afraid to pull that trigger, having a qb competition seems easy to have.

I think you are probably correct, I could see a competition next year and I don't think it's nonsense at all. There's nothing wrong with discussing it.

How does Gus get QB like Nick Marshall and now Jarrett Stidham to come to Auburn after playing at JUCO and Baylor? Maybe we should try that route sometime to get some more competition at QB.. I think Stidham wanted to go to Texas AM or Auburn after Baylor. Now I wish he'd chosen Texas AM. I guess he went with Gus since supposedly Gus had tried to recruit him originally.

I think with the recruitment of Tua, that was one of our biggest qb commitments in a while. Just guessing but I think the staff probably thought with him and Jones, that would be plenty of competition

If you think that JH is a better threat to go through progressions and pass the ball to our talented corps of WR's than Tua, you might want to re-evaluate your eyesight. Not even close. Clearly Tua had much better coaching in that area prior to arriving in Tuscaloosa.
Tua is a better natural pocket passer. He still lacks experience in game, we don't truly know how his decision making is. In a sense we don't really know his weaknesses. Also, since we really haven't seen him except and mop up duty while Jalen blows out teams in the first quarter we really don't know his strengths fully either.

What I do believe is that we know enough about Jalen winning 25 games in 2 underclassmen seasons as the main piece for our offense, while managing a top offense and limiting turnovers. I also think, but don't know, that Jalen has the capabilities of improving as a passer on the Collegiate level. He's done it so far the season

Without quoting multiple people that replied to my post. I would fully support Tua if that's the decision that the staff went with. This thread may be long. But I don't think this is a long thought process for the coaching staff. Do I believe that coach Saban values limited turnovers? Don't you know that already as a fact? I also believe that we know coach Saban values experience.

Furthermore, something that coach Saban always states is a need for his quarterback is to have leadership that takes over and permeates the team. In other words, the team chooses who the leader is. Jalen has been our leader on offense for 2 years since fall camp '16. So just get on the bus and continue to enjoy the ride. Coach Saban will not change that because he feels like he has a quarterback with a better arm. If that were the case then that guy who started the season for us last year would be your quarterback. Intangibles matter and our starting quarterback for the past two years has them in spades, along with some serious serious physical attributes to go along with them.

I really don't have a problem with what any of you were saying. I like Tua as well. I just don't have time to continue to worry about something that I know it's not going to change, and we are probably best off for not changing it. Jalen is a really good quarterback and wasn't necessarily the issue last weekend.

I know that the backup quarterback is always the most popular guy on campus. I just wish we had a game this week so you guys can stop festering over one loss.

Coaches are always looking at what backups have in camp. But, they're not making a change

His decision to pull the trigger had more to do with Lane's conduct.

Very true. All I am saying is that was a very big thing to do which makes a qb competition seem a little tame compared to that. People seem to think Coach Saban is not going to let Tua really compete for the job next year and I just don’t see that happening.

Stidham was the Rivals #6 DT QB in the class of 2015 and was heavily recruited by CNS. I guess he felt like playing for Briles and throwing 50+ times a game would better prepare him for the NFL. At the risk of getting blasted, Stidham looks to be the very type QB most on here have described as being the ideal QB for our offense.

I think the coaches will and should truly evaluate him. May try to make it seem like he has a chance so he doesn't leave. But I don't even think that will happen. I think they will really review how he's playing as a backup. But in reality Jalen will still get the majority of the snaps in camp. With that being said what doesn't seem realistic is Tua showing enough in a camp to offset what Jalen has shown us in games for 2 years. In other words, he will not out play Jalen for the position in camp.

Not only is Jalen a QB that doesn't turn it over. But he creates big plays with his feet and arm. But also doesn't take negative plays. Due to his feet, makes sacks or broken plays into throw aways, or positive plays. I can't see coach getting rid of that security in a practice setting. If he struggles in a game someday and Tua takes the job then that's a different scenario

I think Stidham is a fine QB, and I don't have a problem with it. That being said, I'd rather have Tua.

I absolutely believe there will be a QB competition next year. IMHO I also think Tua might win it. Not because Jalen is bad at all, but because Tua is that good at throwing the ball.

If Stidham had transferred to Bama, Jalen would still be starting. Tua is more than capable of providing competition if that's what the coaches decide.

I watched every other game he's played.

And in the iron bowl, it wasn't a breakdown by the quarterback that cost us. A comedy of errors, poor O line play with costly mistakes, and playcalling. That's just on the offense.

This was just the first time he couldn't bail us out
