I have limited experience with a similar situation. My brother, a college b-ball player, has his best friend die no more than ten feet from him on the court. A hole in his heart was the cause. My brother was being looked at by several maor division one schools, he was in juco at the time, but after this incident he was never the same. They were favored to win the national title that year, but they forfeited their remaining games. My bro disappeared for two years and came back a different person. I guess what I'm saying is that there is no way to guage how an event like this will effect someone. Do I see my brother as a weak person for not being able to handle this? No. He's simply human. His situation was different than JDs. JD didn't lose a someone he cared for because of the game he loved, but who knows what connections he has drawn in his mind? Is he thinking if I left last year would this have happened? Who knows? Time will tell. Give him your support however you can and hope he comes out alright.
