i know many of us suffered the worst rushing breakdown in remembered history, at least my history, and i am asking will the young off linemen that redshirted last year be good enough to fill the void at right tackle, and left guard this year. or will it be more of the same?

Maybe. But they will have to have much better coaching, bigger biceps, and lots more discipline than the line had last year. My biggest concern is that CMS failed to bring in enough dline (especially dtackles) via recruiting over the last couple of years. What was he thinking?

Just couldn't believe that this thread had been here for over an hour and nobody had made this comment. Everybody must be eating and/or drinking PBR.:biggrin2:

Justin Britt is an upcoming senior and probably will man the LG position unless he is moved back to defensive tackle. I keep thinking and hoping that Alex Stadler or perhaps David Ross can take that RT position. We can even move Antoine Caldwell over to RT and have Evan Cardwell or Ross start at center. I am also with you on the defensive tackle shortfall. We better hope Fanney,Washington, Walton, and Deaderick are busting their collective behinds in the weight room this off-season. If not, we are in a world of hurt. I never believe you can count on a true freshman to come in a play SEC level ball his first year with the notable exceptions of guys like Andre Smith and Dante Ellington. The typical SEC lineman in year 3 or 4 is simply too physically developed by then for a 18 year old true freshman. ROLL TIDE ROLL!

IMO, it will all depend on the tale of the tape. If those kids have been properly working out and staying faithful to the S&C program, I think a couple of them could factor in. Britt needs to go back to DT because we have very real needs on the D-line. We are full-to-bursting with young OL; the real question is did they have enough discipline to maintain their work-outs despite the poor requirements from the coaches or did they get lazy and not work? We need a couple of these guys to be ready physically or all the coaching in the world won't help them. I'm afraid a couple of the guys we have penciled in as DTs simply aren't going to make it there and need to be moved back to their natural positions (Fanney and Washington.)

It will definitely help, but I think the biggest difference will be better coaching, and a better offensive blocking scheme. Also, a better S&C program will reap huge dividends.

With Saban there is no "choice" to stick to the S&C or not. There is no "choice" whether to go to the weight room or not. They WILL get stronger. They WILL work hard. They do not have a choice.

That will be the difference this season. We lost a lot of those games in the second half last season because of fatigue and lack of physical strength. I GUARANTEE that won't be a problem this season.

If not already most of these guys are about to have a very rude awakening.

Re: question: will our redshirt freshmen off linemen be difference

I'm going to try to be pointed but diplomatic regarding this post. Plainly put, every one of our redshirt frosh on the OL can have a chance to start in 07. However, here's the key. In the past few years, our incumbent OL (for the most part) have enjoyed a system that rewarded poor work ethic and major lack of discipline.

As a result, newcomers had two choices. First, fall into line with the "status quo." By that, I mean that they follow the example of the upperclassmen... maybe realizing that no matter how hard they worked, favorites would be the starters. Second, envision the day when an equal playing field was here... in the absence of Shula's staff or not. Instead of being as mediocre as they may be allowed, get into the weight room and bust their rear end getting ready.

Now, here's the question... how many of our redshirt frosh OL took the second route instead of the first? I believe the best lock of all to have done that may be Taylor Pharr... he had a terrific workout program coming in... and was said to be an animal in following it. The bad thing about it is that if they've waited to start until now, they're going to likely be behind the upperclassmen... solely due to the experience factor.

Here's hoping that Ross, Stadler, and Motley might also be in that boat. If so, look for some interesting possibilities... and battles in the spring/fall to boot.

I think we will see a RS Freshman starting at RT. Otherwise they will provide excellent depth to a much improved OL...mostly for the reasons Bama323 stated.

I agree. I don't think new players will be required to have a good O-line next year.
