Rader rumors combined...

Actually, its a positive thing for a team's assistant coaches to be considered for head coaching positions. Its when nobody wants them that a program is in trouble. :) RTR.

I also took it as a positive thing but for Rader. Lets be honest, most assistant coaches want to become HC at sometime. Coaches come and coaches go. I wonder how many AC left while Bear was at Bama. I know several that left went on to win national championships.

Rader has been a HC before with Tulsa right? I don't mean this as a knock on him, just a question. I think I remember correctly that he was completely out of coaching at the time he started at Alabama, running his company. Is that correct? If so, couple that with our lack of offensive production over the past couple of years and to me it wouldn't make him one of the "hot" assistants that are mentioned for open HC positions.

I thought the pattern kind of went, some school's offense or defense is ranked very highly nationally, the Coordinator is some young up & comer or maybe some old coach looking for redemption and their name starts being tossed around as good replacements for outgoing coaches. Rader (not blaming him, just stating a fact) doesn't seem to fit that mold--(1) we haven't been an offensive powerhouse the past three years; and (2) he wasn't an old and/or disgraced coach proving himself again, he'd been out of coaching for a while. If anything Kines fits that mold more than anybody on our current staff to me. With our back to back top finishes in national defense I could see his name or a defensive assistant's name being mentioned, but not an offensive coach; at least not yet.

Plus, I was under the impression that Rader came back to coaching as a favor to Shula. If that is the case I have to wonder if he would want to coach somewhere else.

Dave Rader had some pretty good seasons at Tulsa and some not so good ones as well. One thing that the President of Rice University said was they would look for someone who understood the special academic interests of Rice University and athletics. Dave Rader would fit that mold.

I don't know if he has interviewed, don't know if they have contacted him, don't know if he is interested. All I know is he is being talked about as a leading candidate.

What I don't like here is taking this thread as a platform to make improper comments about any coaches.

Was this directed at me? Since my post is quoted I assume it was. If so I take exception to that since I don't think I was making an improper comment about any coach. If you look back at my posts I've never been in the "fire Rader" camp or part of the contingent that has blamed him for our offensive woes. I've known for a while that Shula calls the plays and that it is Shula's offense. I think it goes without question that our offense has not set any NCAA offensive records the past three years nor lead the nation in any offensive categories (except maybe sacks allowed in one game). I did not state or try to imply that any of this was Rader's fault. But I think barring some inside knowledge and/or personal relationship, most ADs looking for coaching candidates would at least take that into account. Generally assistant coaches get mentioned for HC positions because their performance on another team gets noticed in a positive manner. What I was curious about is, is there some connection between Rader and Rice or the AD that I don't know about that would make him a likely candidate? Like I said, based on offensive performance alone, I don't see any of our offensive coaches being a "hot" HC prospect; defensive coaches might be another matter. We have finished in the top 5 in defense the past two years.

No, sorry, but it was not directed to you.

I'm not a moderator(thank God), but I don't see anything currently in this thread that would remotely qualify as "improper criticism" of coaches.

The closest remark would be the one poster that stated that he didn't think that Rader was a good OC. However, that doesn't seem to be "improper", as it is a qualitative opinion of the performance of a quasi-public(as ruled by the judge in the Cottrell case) servant.

I think we have had this discussion before. Members don't always see posts before they are deleted.
