Hadn't been following any of this as I'm not much of a 'recruitnik' anymore. Certainly didn't expect all this drama when I clicked to open this thread.
Just wanted to say that so so SO FEW of these young men with serious baggage work out that just basing it off of the odds alone it's rarely worth the effort for any team to bring these kids in.
1-The media is going to hammer you for doing it, the least of your worries.
2-The media's going to perhaps rightly point out how absurd it was to bring the kid in in the first place if he runs afoul of rules/law.
3-The potential for being a bad-apple on the team is simply tremendous! Not to mention that if a person knows you're keeping a close eye on them they're going to push their destructive behavior even further down to hide it perhaps making the impact much worse.
4-Simply from a football standpoint, looking at the percentages that don't work out it's not worth the effort in any way.
Just as a note, Bama like all schools through the years has taken a few fliers on 'baggage-recruits' and more often than not the results aren't satisfactory. I feel so firmly about this that I wish a player signed last year wasn't signed and though I wish him well I don't anticipate a full productive trouble free graduate with his signing, that's just what the odds are.
Having said all that I place no faith in the criminal justice system to find the truth nor administer justice. However even giving my less than favorable view of our legal/law enforcement systems I believe in what would best be termed 'full forgiveness' for people who've paid their debt to society - done their time.
