An easy one:

Electric or crank ice cream freezer, ice, rock salt

Six pack of Orange Crush or comparable orange soda

One can of Eagle Brand

Toss it in and let 'er rip

Add diced pineapple for pineapple/orange

The best sherbet that I have ever tasted is called Guri-Guri. It is made by a Japanese family in Kahului, Maui at a tiny Ice Cream shop at the Maui Mall. There are only two flavors Strawberry and Pineapple.

I lived in Honolulu for twelves years and my wife is originally from Maui. We visit family there often. Everytime I go to Maui I have to make sure that I go and get some Guri-Guri. It is really good. I don't know what the special ingredient is but it gives it a silky smooth texture and the taste is unforgettable. It really is almost addicting like the article says. It is different from any sherbet I have ever tasted. It's kind of a mixture of a good Italian Ice, a fruit sorbet and a creamy sherbet.

In the article Tasaka said his grandfather Jokichi invented Guri-Guri, and that it was something he "just made up" one day. The Guri-Guri name comes from the phrase "goodie-goodie", which is what the family originally called its frozen creation during Maui's plantation days.

some Guri-Guri

Here is an article with what they say is a close approximation or guess at how to make Guri-Guri. I can't vouch for it because I haven't made it yet. If it is half as good as Guri-Guri it will be great.

Goodie Goodie is fun to make and tastes almost like the Maui sherbet Guri-Guri.

GOODIE GOODIE
"Flavors of the Royal Hawaiian," the Royal Hawaiian Waikiki, 1996

2 12-ounce cans strawberry soda
14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
12-ounce can 7-Up

Mix all ingredients. Freeze for 3 hours. Whisk mixture and refreeze. Makes about 7 cups.

In this article there are also two recipes for Green Tea Ice Cream and one for Tea Granita.

I have a recipe book called "The Ultimate Ice Cream Book" They missed the boat on the Guri Guri but they do have Green Tea Ice Cream which I have made and it is very good. Some others I have had that may sound strange is Red Bean Ice Cream, Rice Ice Cream, Saffron Custard, Cinnamon Ice Cream, and Carrot Granata.

Just call me "Mikey" I'll try anything.

The small Cuisinart Ice Cream maker is a nice appliance. It only makes 1 1/2 quarts at a time. Not enough for a family reunion but enough for a small family. I have one extra mixing bowl so I can make two flavors. I put them in a tightly sealed tupperware and toss them in the freezer. It is enough ice cream to last me most of a week.

Do any of the T-town posters remember the old Pure Process Ice Cream plant at the foot of River Hill? The talk of orange-pinapple sherbert reminded me of my favorite PP flavor Orange-Pineapple!!! My second favorite was Grape. Dad always made a stop at PP on our Sunday drives.

I'm gonna have to check out one of those Cuisinart machines. Looks like a good size for someone (me, for example
)who attacks ice cream like an Old Testament swarm of locust
