Dang lazarus, thanks for the info. It's good to see someone else with their nose to the ground on this board. Between you, RTO, and Ping... we should have the best Bama recruiting info on the net :)

Im happy to hear Prince is doing well. I hope he gets to practice a bit with the first/second team during bowl practice, and you guys can give us the scoop on how well he does.

Most of the people I talk to, both from AL and FL, have been saying for the last four weeks that they though the Tide would be tough to beat for Tebow. Given that anything can happen between now and Dec. 14 (when Tebow is supposed to announce a school on ESPN), I think Alabama's going to get his signature.

In fact, the last "hold out" that I usually share thoughts with (and who's been in the Tebow to UF camp from the beginning), stated today, for the very first time, that his FL contacts are now saying "Tebow's headed to the Tide".

I do think Smelley puts off his decision until Tebow makes his (which is only wise), and I do think it was smart not to alienate him, but I do think Tim Tebow's likely a Tider.

First off let me say I am fairly optimistic that Tebow will sign with Bama. I am patiently waiting for Dec. 14th when he is scheduled to announce his commitment on ESPN. Right now his top five in no particular order are Alabama, Florida, LSU, Michigan, and Southern California.

Gator Country: The Case for Tebow to Florida
Something Stinks with Smelley: Long rumored to be an Alabama silent, Chris Smelley had 2 surprise visitors this week; Shula and an assistant coach. Reportedly Spurrier has picked up his efforts with Smelley, and one would assume that the thought of losing their 2 biggest QB targets led the coaches to arrange this visit despite being in the midst of an important rivalry game week with championship implications. This favors the Gators.

Tebow Recruiting for Bama: While I think this is a case of perception becoming reality, I will list it as an advantage to Bama. Tebow has been mentioned in numerous articles over the last 2 months as having asked players to consider or visit Bama. Individually these comments have not been entirely overwhelming, but when attached to the statement "Tebow is recruiting for Bama" they get taken very differently. Most of these articles were written by Bama sites. Interpretation is up to the reader, but I honestly feel he likes Bama, and he is just giving them the good word. In the case of the UF lean players, these are all players who want to take trips, and Tebow enjoyed his trips there. If he was forced into picking Bama, my feeling is he may use the added exposure to help recruit away from UF, but I believe his primary objective is to remain at UF with his friends.

Sometimes I actually feel invisible on this board. Where is my nose up in the air. ;)

You are our surfer guy tho!! There is a difference heh. I was mainly talking about people that talk to insiders or maybe even team mates of recruits, and then form opinions (biased maybe?) from that.

I do enjoy you posting links to articles just as much as their opinions.

I also dont see how the Gator fans can be THAT confident in getting Tebow considering how he has pretty much given all of his attention to us. I mean, it seems he has given LSU more attention that Florida.

fret not Surfer, you are a master of finding great recruiting stories online and are much appreciated !

I, too, also believe he has more interest in LSU, than UF.
Let me add my thanks to lazarus for the info, & please, keep it coming! TF just keeps getting better!

Believe me I have my informed opinions. I put them out here from time to time. I am just a little more private with them. I try to post as many factual quotes and articles as I can find. I also leave a lot of the speculating about grades and insider info on the board to those that know better than me.

After all nobody really knows what will happen until it actually does no matter what the "insiders" say. I remember when Prothro was certainly not going to qualify and Bama had the best defensive line class in history, of which David Paine and Mac Tyler didn't qualify, and Albert Means did, you know the rest unfortunately.

The guys that follow recruiting for a living will admit most of the time they have no idea what a recruit is going to do. Just look at Scout.com vs. Rivals.com on their rankings, player favorites, quotes, etc. They are night and day sometimes between the two sites. I would even say some recruits really don't know what they are going to do until right before they do it. ;)

Surf your the Rodney Dangerfield around here. You've been here and done that. Time will tell about these people with their "contacts".

Keep up the good job.
RTR!

OK well this is not insider info but I will give you my opinon or speculation on the Gator Country Tebow story above.

I just read the Jamar Hornsby UF commitment story over on Gator Country. In the Tebow story Gator Country talked about how Hornsby called Tebow prior to commiting to UF. They think that is a positive thing for UF.

If you read the second paragraph below even though Meyer was recruiting the heck out of Hornsby as his top WR target and he was text messaging him every morning Hornsby was still torn between Georgia and Florida. It appears Hornsby decision was made because of the close proximity of UF to his home and not that Tebow has indiciated that he was going to UF. His decision also appears to have been made after Georgia gave him an MRI and found he had a torn ACL. I read that in another article. If Tebow is leaing to UF why was Hornsby torn between UGA and UF? Just using some Tide Fans logic against the Gator Country Tebow story.

Hornsby Commits To The Gators
Jamar Hornsby came back from Athens where he saw the Auburn-Georgia game. He thoroughly enjoyed Athens but the recruiting process had worn him down. He had trouble sleeping Sunday night, a combination of anxiety over making the final decision and the pain from a knee he injured Friday night.

"It was between Florida and Georgia," he said. "I was sitting here debating all night. In the beginning it was kid of fun, but then it got old. I hurt my knee pretty bad so I just wanted to get it out of the way. I just want to see how the Gator fans react to it."

Wow! That Gator article on Tebow makes me think they are scared to death that they are going to lose him to us. This recruiting should be the next reality series on tv. I just can't believe how people are disecting every word, manerism or who he's buddies with. It's ridicules to say the least. You'd think by the way so many people's worried about this one player that who ever get's him wins the lottery.

Personally, I don't know much about the recruits or who we are recruiting except from what I read on here and in the paper. It's reminding me of the pro football and basketball lottery's and drafts. A team who gets the number 1 draft or recruit automatically is expected to transform from a dog of a team to a contender the next season. I do know the differences between them but it is amazing how some people will live and die by how high our recruiting classes are ranked without ever seeing these boys in uniform.

Just how much of a difference is there between Tebow and say Smelley who is supposedly our second choice? Can we win a National Championship with either one with or without the number 1 offensive line class in the nation? Or what about the best defense in the nation recruiting wise.

I didn't see that Gator site factor in which team was going to have the best offensive line recruits this recruiting season. Think about that Tim and Chris before you decide. From all that I have read and heard we are doing fairly well in that catagory.

Hornsby has been told for a while to commit ASAP b/c of his lackluster senior year performance.....I've also heard UGA was a thanks, but no thanks kinda thing after the MRI.....also, Hornsby has almost ZERO chance of qualifying so it'll be 2 years before he's a Gator anyway.

And Surf has written some recruiting articles himself, so he deserves the cred, too.

I think its interesting how TV coverage of recruiting is now playing a role in the process.

With the popularity of reality shows, ESPN has realized signing announcement shows can be big national ratings getters during the dead period between season end and bowl games.

However, in order to keep it interesting and to garner big audiences, they need high profile impact players willing to take officials to several big schools and then not tip their hat as to any favorites.

I think their is definately some coaching from ESPN, but the question is: what do the kids get in return? A chance to be on TV? Is their money involved?

I wouldn't be surprised id ESPN wasn't paying $20k or so to the top 10 kids to keep things interesting and agree to announce on their show. After all, this sort of thing is a proven ratiings generator and advertising revenue could easily top $1-2 MM.

What do you think? Is the recruiting process being orchestrated to get TV ratings? RTR.

I'm leaning more and more to us having 10 more commits. Heard a recent interview with Shula and he said they had 15 commits. To get to 15, we'd have to subtract a couple from our list-- maybe no on Holifield and a greyshirt to Higgenbotham?....just speculation.

With our remaining 10 spots, here's a look:

1. MLB: Spikes or Smith. Fairly confident we will get one.
2. QB: Tebow or Smelley. If Tebow doesn't commit 12/14, Smelley gets offer next day, IMO.
3 and 4. DL: Ricks, Chinasa, Whitehead, Goggans, or Marshall. It might grow to three spots if the right ones fall in place.
5 and 6. WR: Hawthorne, Smith, Fayson, Alexander, or McCoy. Recent interviews sound like the staff is high on all these kids and will likely take 2 only. Could see it growing to 3 if other positions fall through.
7. OLB: AJ Jones, Craig Stevens, or Derrick Odom. Fairly confident at least one of these kids will pull the trigger.
8. OL: Andre Smith or Jacques McClendon or both. Staff would make room. Staff might make another offer if both don't come.
9. CB: Jenije, Udell, or Hill. Jenije is the most likely and has the Tide up top with Clemson.
10. Wild card: could be the extra additions at other positions I've mentioned or someone like Cordera Eason, Mon Williams, CJ Spiller, or Justin Woodall.

RTO,

If Shula said 15, then that would seem to suggest no Holifield - Shula apparently doesn't want to take a JUCO unless they can come in early and get a Spring under their belt. As for the other possibility, it seems like all our '06 commits right now are solid, so unless it is Higg taking a greyshirt, is there a possibility one of the guys who is currently greyshirting from the '05 class isn't coming back? I'm fairly certain Harvey will be here from what you have posted on him previously, but what about Sikes and Burnthall? Heard anything on those two? Are they in Tuscaloosa as part time students right now?

I haven't heard anything regarding Sikes or Burnthall in a while. Don't know how they are progressing, but they are at Bama. We'll just have to see how it plays out, but what I said re: Holifield and Hig is my best guess at this point.

And while I'm posting again, isn't it nice to see that list up there and know that if we miss target #1, target #'s 2 and 3 are VERY good alternatives. :)

Yes, rto, that is definitely nice to see.

Some random thoughts:

**I feel really good about Goggans changing his commit to Bama any day now. He seems to be swaying, now hopefully Hutchins can finish him off.

**I also have a great feeling about Earl Alexander. It has no basis, but I think we are in great shape with him. Any thoughts rto?

**Will Smelley wait out Tebow and jump on the offer it TT says no on December 14th?

**With all the talk about Hawthorne, Fayson, etc, at the WR position, Nikita Stover seems to be the forgotten man. This guy is a stud and will play a lot next season.

**Whatever happened to Toryan Smith? I haven't seen an update on him in forever. I guess he's just laying low until he takes another visit or two. Truth be told, I'd rather have Spikes, but you couldn't go wrong with either one.

**If Jenije comes aboard, is Johnson a safety for us? That would give us two corners and two safeties in this class if Johnson is a safety. I don't know, but between he, Coger, and Jenije, MJ seems to have the frame that would most easily translate to a safety.

**Andy Davis, Charlie Higgenbotham, and Charlie Kirschman can hit a ton. If you haven't seen their videos, trust me. These guys absolutely lay the wood.

**Is David Ross a guard or center for us? I guess it depends on what Smith does and what happens with Motley, as well as Cardwell's development, but as of now, what is he? My guess is guard.

**Please, Andre, come to Bama. Look at the offensive line class you could cap off:

LT - Alex Stadler
LG - Andre Smith
C - Brian Motley
RG - David Ross
RT - Taylor Pharr
