There is not doubt in my mind that Richard would not have progressed anymore by staying another year. He will learn more in the NBA/NBDL than he would have ever learned staying one more year with CMG. The only thing that could of happened is CMG running him the ground, i.e., Ron Steele.

That leads me to another thing. The two most sucessful pros from the Gottfried era are Gerald Wallace and Mo Williams who spent a total of 3 years under is "tutelage." I don't think Gottfried can develop talent. Today's players want a coach who can get them to the next level. CMG is not that guy.

Can anyone name a coach that DOES develop talent for the NBA? Don't give me Coach K, or Roy Williams, or Calipari........they get McDonalds AA 2 or 3 every year........

Most NBA players now are from High Schools, Europe, or they did their One and Done in College........no one develops NBA Players anymore. They develop on the job.

I can't give CMG the blame for the change in the NBA Game. If you look at the top 50 NBA Players how many stayed more than 2 years in college?

How many SEC Players are in the NBA now? The SEC Lists

Alabama having 4 (including Hendrix)
Arkansas has 3
Auburn has 1 - Marquis Daniels
Florida has 9
Georgia has 2 - Jarvis Hayes, Damien Wilkins
UK has 9
LSU has 6
MSU has 1 and that's Eric Dampier 12 year Vet
USC has 2 -
UT has 1 - CJ Watson
Vandy has 0
Ole Miss has 0

Richard's Problem is that he's built like a fullback, and not a Power Forward......he's too short for the 4, and too big for the 3..... he just doesn't have the NEW NBA body. The days of having a Barkley or even a Corliss Williamson type body are over.....

It may not just be the coaching that helps. I am not a basketball guy, but I have to believe that the repetition and high level of practice and competition helps to develop a player. Surely some coaches are better at putting together practices and developing fundamentals than others. I know that this is one of the main selling points of NBA coaches like Larry Brown.

I know one thing, if an athlete is not good enough to make it as a pro when he arrives, his chances to develop "on the job" are almost zero. You have a very narrow window in which to impress. If you need development, stay in school. If things don't work out at the next level, you will have that degree to fall back on, and the appreciation of the fans and supporters of your school (which often leads to career opportunities).

Some coaches lose more players than others to the draft before they have graduated. Are they the better coaches? IMO, the best are more successful at convincing a young player that they have a great deal to gain by staying.

Again, I am not a BB guy - so this is just a casual fan's opinion...
