At the Arkansas football game this weekend I heard from a very, very credible source that Ronald Steele will be red shirted this upcoming season. His knee is not close to being healthy. There should be an announcement coming soon.

what?

its not a rumor. just wait and see.
I don't have a source close to the situation, but I wondered if this might be the case (Steele red-shirting). I've heard he has a ways to go with his rehab and would not be anywhere near 100% when the season starts.

IMHO he would be better off red-shirting if he is not 100% early in the season. Steele is incredibly talented and has a pro career in his future, but he's got to get healthy first.

When will it be announced?

Apparently, no one is monitoring the basketball board or the rules are different over here. If this were a football player, this thread would've lasted 3 minutes.

I wasn't given a time frame on the announcement but it should be soon.

I wasn't trying to "break" the rules with this post, I was only trying to pass along some info I received. We will see here in the next couple weeks if I am right or not.

I'm not calling you out. I appreciate the breaking news, especially if it is true. I just find it funny that this thread is alive and well...it would've been slaughtered on the football board.

He and his brother will be able to play with each other...that will be interesting.

I think it is best for this to happen. If he comes back healthy, we will be a Pre Season top 10 in '08.

I know that there will be alot of point guards going into the draft after this season, and that could help him in the draft after next. But does that make for a another struggling season? There is still no one like Ron on the team. Somebody screwed-up last year (coaches, doctors,etc.).

We need to let last year go. That horse has been beaten to death. The bottom line that our fans need to realize is that it is very very likely that Ron will not regain the burst/physical ability that he had prior to his knee ailments. IF he redshirts this season, Alabama fans shouldn't be counting on Ron Steele version 2005-06 to lead the team during the 2008-09 season.

As for the notion that not having Ron this season would make for "another struggling season," I would have to say that's not likely. IF he redshirts, Alabama players/coaches/staff will know that Ron is not an option from the get go. They won't be waiting around until 1 hr before tip to see if Ron can play or not. I don't think we'll see a team looking around for Ron to lead them. Additional leaders will emerge.

No link, but here is the text of the press release....

TUSCALOOSA – After consultation with his Alabama coaches, particularly head coach Mark Gottfried, University of Alabama senior point guard Ronald Steele, who was a 2007 preseason AP All-American and a 2006 AP All-American Honorable Mention, has decided to take a medical redshirt for the 2007-08 season.

“I am someone who tries to approach whatever I do with my best effort, and I know my body. At this point in time, I don’t believe I will be 100 percent by the start of practice,” said Steele who underwent arthroscopic surgeries on both his left and right knees on April 3 and a follow-up procedure on his left knee on August 11. “This is something I’ve put a lot of thought and prayer into. I want to play my best and play an entire season and know I’ve done everything I can on the court to help Alabama win.

“The doctors have told me my future for playing is good, but right now the timing for me to heal and be back in shape like I need to be to play on the level we play isn’t on my side. My teammates are out on the floor conditioning every day, getting ready for the season, and I know how important that is, and right now I’m not able to run and do all the things that they are doing. So that’s why I’ve decided to do this. Right now my plan is still to graduate in December, start taking classes toward a second degree in January and then come back next fall and have a great senior season with my team.”

Gottfried says he supports Steele’s decision.

“Ron and I have discussed this a few times and because he feels he won’t be at 100 percent this year, I completely support him and this decision,” said Alabama head basketball coach Mark Gottfried who recruited the two-time State of Alabama Mr. Basketball out of Birmingham’s John Carroll High School. “I have said many times I will not put him on the floor prior to being 100 percent, and it is my hope that Ron will return next season even better than before.”

If Hendrix and Gee stay after this season, and Ron comes back the best he can with the knee problems, then Alabama is easily a top ten team. Hendrix and Gee are the only guys who could jump to the league in my opinion, and losing Mykal Riley is not too bad because of how guard-dominated this team is. Plus, Ron gets to play with his baby brother now haha.
