Has someone on the board heard of this guy, Sean Dietrich. Combination music hostorian and musician and has a blog and does occasional videos. Here is one I stumbled across.
He does shows here and there. Doing a couple in Birmingham in December. Might be interesting.
 
He seems like a good cross between musician and story-teller.
To me, it is really interesting the way Scottish & Irish music crossed the Atlantic and became something American.
I listened to him and you are right on target. His songs are one's that dominated the old South Christian music before WWII -- primarily in the rural areas. And there were a lot of rural areas and churches.
