re: Should Alabama "cool it" on the Yellow hammer yell?

As soon as the game was over I was hoping not to hear it, there is a time I can't wait for it, but Saturday wasn't it, and we need to hold back. Bama fan since 1960.

What would Coach Bryant say about it, or what would Jesus do?

Well we did the RJ cheer in Pasadena after beating Texas. I enjoyed standing on the bleachers in the Rose Bowl letting those Longhorns fans and their cow bells have it. Its all in good fun.

We used to sing it before and after games when Coach Bryant was here. This was against patsies as well as the big dogs.

Jesus doesn't care about college football.

i think it should be sung after every victory. its not low class, its a cheer.

i also think we should bring back playing deacon blues and superfreak over the pa before the games.

re: Should Alabama "cool it" on the Yellow hammer yell?

All of the players for SJSU are the same age as the guys on our team. Most of them have been playing football for the same period of time. They are Division 1-A (FBS) and their win counts as the same amount of wins as does Auburn, LSU, or Penn State. The only difference is a perceived difference based on how good we think they are prior to the game...and eventually during and after the game (which is actual and not perceived). To say that the win this past weekend is lower in value is a discredit to all of the guys who played at 100% for the Crimson Tide. So...to use the level of competition as a measuring stick as to whether or not the band should play RJYH is a slap in the face to both teams out there playing as hard as they can.

Now...you as a fan have the freedom to participate or not when it comes to joining in with the band after a victory. If you think the team we played was not "worthy" of the RJYH cheer...then you refrain from saying it. That is a personal opinion and you have the freedom to do what you wish.

FWIW...the RJYH cheer is simply a stamp at the end of the game that says we won. Like I said before...it does not discriminate based on the competition prior to or during the game. Another poster here said if other teams don't want to hear it...tell them to outscore us.

re: Should Alabama "cool it" on the Yellow hammer yell?

Opinions are like bellybuttons...everyone has one and this is mine: I love the cheer after certain games, but do not think it appropriate after every win. I think it should be saved for those special wins where we have a particular axe to grind. LOVED it after the Texas BCS game! Loved it every time we beat Tennessee. Don't think I will love it against Penn State. Too much history there, too much respect. Feel the same way about Oklahoma.

On the other hand, I don't see a way to be selective in the real world. It's not like we can take a vote in the stadium....

So, whatthehell, it just a game anyway. Let 'er rip!:BigA:
I agree with a lot of this. If I remember correctly, the band had decided not to play Rammer Jammer if we beat OU in 2003. No surprise there after they were such great hosts in Norman in 2002. I wouldn't be surprised if something similar happened this time. Showing respect for traditional foes is a good thing.

I think if all the 'should we rammer jammer?' threads from over the years were merged, it would rival the hat thread.

92, Jesus loves you and loves what matters to you and to me, college football, yes, he loves it.

Coach Bryant talked about Class and a lot. "We don't want any sorry people around here, we want people with class."

We shouldn't do it to teams from the WAC.

then i guess Jesus loves beer ;)

i never understand why folks always try to invoke Jesus (and Coach Bryant ;)) "on their side" in matters of competition, but i won't drag a football thread there.

i was at several games with patsies in the late 70s early 80s where rammer jammer was sung with gusto before and after the game. didn't seem to bother Coach Bryant at all.

as someone said earlier, if you don't like the cheer, don't join in, but don't sit around and call others classless for doing it.

Coach Bryant isn't our Head Coach anymore. If Coach Saban wants it to stop, it will - if he doesn't want to stop it, the band will continue to play it and some 100k folks will continue to sing it.

That sums up my feelings on the song too.

I am a young bama fan, only 26, but wasn't this cheer done before games up to the late 1990s? I only attended a few during that time period but I thought the cheer used to be used to pump up the team, stating "We're gonna" instead of now just using after the game stating "We just" My opinion is if its going to be used after 1 point wins over quality opponents and 40 point wins over the SJSUs of the world, then the fan base (and the band, since its reliant on them) should have the guts to sing it before the game as well.

What was Jesus's first miracle? maybe WINE?

Someone posted about not doing it for certain teams because of respect? Then its not a cheer, a cheer you do it no matter who you are playing.

How come the school asked the band to stop starting it several years ago?

I don't mind the thing, I wait for it, but is it a cheer or a statement?

Answer the question (not sounding like John McEnroe) about doing for the WAC and not the Sooners/Penn State?

If you don't like it do as I do. Appologize to the opposing fans that appear irritated. It is not going to go away. I think the compromise was well thought out.
