Shula has no confidence in Marc

M Guillon

I personally got exactly what I expected out of MG. He really didn't play that badly. There were many mental mistakes all day by the players....and yes the staff, however, the effort was good and no one player should be singled out in this game. There needs to be some changes made....one good one is in the punt return team....ie needless holding and face mask flags, fielding punts inside the 10,not fair catching the ball....I could go on,but I have been saying this all year guys. Therefore, I hope some changes are made at least in this dept. b/c it's the little things like these that make the difference in many games. I know everyone will say this is a tired ole line, but Bear always said the kicking game decides most big games.I again say MG played about the game I expected under the circumstances and CMS had the game plan I expected,so no surprises there for me. I expect MG will play better next week, and he's better than the SC qb anyway.

What about...

shula did call a pass play inside our own 10 on a first down so i think he does have some confidence in him. i'm hoping (and probably being overly optimistic) that shula just got overconfident in the run today. either way, you can't expect a guy to throw the ball once every half hour and still be on target. we've got to throw the ball more regardless of how good we are running or how unproven the QB is.

geez, i don't know how you look so good in a game and lose by so much. i really need to stop watching football.

oh, and btw, was i the only one who knew, just knew that arkansas would easily score on their last drive of the first half?

all week Shula made a big deal about how the offense wasn't going to just crawl into a shell and play conservatively. but today thats exactly what he did.
I couldn't have said it better myself.

Hellooooooooooo turtle offense.

I don't know if it was Shula's intentions, but, to me at least, he sent the message up in lights: "I have no confidence in Marc Guillon".

He's gotta let the kid throw the ball a little more.

Have you ever thought

Interesting thought. I don't know what the deal was. Marc took most of the snaps in the spring so CMS knows what he possesses. Miami wouldn't have recruited him if they didn't think he had talent either.

I don't know what was going on...maybe it was Rader and not Shula. I just don't know.

It's not the QB that cms doesn't have confidence in?

Give CMS a break.....

What kind of play selection would you expect with a back-up QB making his first start. Yes... I know he took 80% of the snaps in the spring, but he is still just a sophomore who is really in just his first year with this system. And the way Ray was busting out BIG runs, the next touchdown was just around the corner, using the running game. A loss that could easily have been a win frustrates all of us. But give CMS a break on play selection on this one.
ROLL TIDE!

And if Guillon had thrown more and had 4-5 interceptions what would your mantra be?

And Avalos won that game throwing something like 5 passes for the day.

Yes, I know Alabama won that day. But that wasn't my point. I think everyone would agree that Avalos wasn't the game manager that day, and that's what yesterday's game reminded me of. Ok, maybe I overstated when I said Shula had no confidence in Gullion. Obviously he does, maybe just not enough, maybe for good reason, who knows. Like I said, I'm not in anyone's head. I'm just saying that that was my impression.

Now having said that, I have confidence in all of them. Coaches, players, they played a tough, good game. They'll do fine.

I can not say I blame Shula for not being too confident in Marc. He threw the ball with quite bad authority on several throws. On the last drive Marc threw 5 yards, literally, away from the WR with very little pressure.

He looked quite bad, IMO.

Think positive

Obviously these are just some of my opinions from watching the game yesterday. I am going to defend Marc's performance. I thought he did very well. I don't think it was a lack of confidence in Marc that kept the number of pass attempts down. I think it was a lack of confidence in the receivers to go after and catch the ball. Remember our most experienced receiver this year is only a Soph. I think the first two passes were throw his way and the results weren't successful. I am not trying to point out any specific player I am just making a point. I thought Marc looked really sharp and all of the receivers let him down by not going after the ball or making the catch. I am not saying he was perfect or that he didn't make any errors. We all do that is what makes us human. It seemed that the Arkansas DBs wanted the ball more every time the ball was thrown.

I really think that if Coach Shula did not have confidence in Marc as some of you in this thread are saying then you would have seen Spencer Pennington come into the ball game early on.

I also believe that with Coach Shula having a young inexperienced QB making his first start on the road in front of such a hostile crowd that conventional wisdom would say that you bring him along slowly and not put too much pressure on him to win the game just with his arm. I don't think anyone would argue that if Bama had Brodie behind the center that it would have been a different game.

And let me close with I am as disappointed as anyone on this board with the loss yesterday. I don't like to see Bama ever lose a game. I just don't believe it is the time to point fingers and make accusations about coaches’ schemes and play calling or player’s mistakes, etc. In my opinion this is a time for us Bama fans to circle the wagons and support the team.

After all a 3 -1 record no matter what the competition is a whole hell of a lot better than last year. Be advised that Utah State beat UNLV (Tennessee's first opponent) yesterday. I am still hopeful that Bama will win at least two of their next 4 games which would put them in decent shape for a shot at a bowl. Let's think positive and get behind the team. Bama has come a long way from this time last year. Hopefully by the end of the year they will be a lot further along than where they are now. Roll Tide!

We must have faith!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The season AIN'T over, yet! We must have confidence in our young coach and team!! Don't forget that we have alot of experience on the staff!!! Saturday is about what I expected (with the qb change). It was good experience for Marc.

I still believe!! :BigA:

Guillon's First Interception...

was a result of the pass going through Prothro's arms, not because Guillon made a bad pass. He hit him in the hands. It looked like Prothro knew a hit was coming and pulled his head up before he secured the ball.

And if Guillon had thrown more and had 4-5 interceptions what would your mantra be?
Hah! And how do you figure he would have done that? You're claiming the absolute worst would have happened! How exactly do you know this? Can I borrow the crystal ball? I see that you, also, have no confidence in Marc.

If he'd thrown more pics, so be it. We were behind. We needed to throw the ball more, not only on obvious passing downs.

We lost the game because of mistakes and missed opportunities to make plays....not because we didn't throw the ball more. Why would you need to throw the ball when we were running the ball all over them? How can anyone see that as a lack of confindence in MG?

true... that really wasn't Guillon's fault unless you want to talk about choice of receivers to throw to. which is what i'm wondering the most about.

Are the coaches telling Guillon to only throw to one receiver on any given play to keep him from having to think? if so, how can we expect any of the rest of our SEC games to be any different than this one? I don't remember the exact number of times that it happened, but i saw way too many short passes thrown into 2 or 3 defenders while the other receiver(S) was/were obviously more open or at least 1 on 1 coverage.

when a team repeatedly stacks the box on you and you're on your own 40 or closer to the opponents enzone, it's time to take a couple of shots deep. i know that they did this a couple of times and had a couple overthrown and one drop, but i was about to claw my eyeballs out early in the game (1st quarter) because BAMA was scared to spread the field and force Ark defense to gamble with the pass rush. i don't recall seeing 4 WRs on the field more than three times the entire game. that is ridiculous.

it was great to see Alabama run the ball so well on a pretty good D-Line and decent linebackers, but there's not really a good excuse for not trying to exploit one of the weaker SEC secondaries that we will face all year. let me tell you now, the cocks' secondary is roughly 10 times better than arkansas's. Guillon is going to have to throw the ball a lot more on the opponents side of the field. i don't know who's decision that is to make, but they better get a passing game plan together for Marc... AND SOON. or BAMA may only win 6 games like the prognosticators suggest.

I still think BAMA is capable of winning 9 games. the Defense is almost A caliber and the running game is a thing of beauty (though the corner should have been exploited much more against the hogs than it was). Do we have the counter-tre in the playbook??? is the toss sweep out of the question with a running back that is as fast as RH??? passes to the fullback and the TE were almost non-existent. BAMA lost this game on poor pass play calling on our side of the ball and another great performance by Matt Jones. hats off to the hogs for staying within their game plan and letting Matt run the game.

Coach Shula has got every bit of confidence in Marc

Coach Shula has full confidence in Marc Guillon.

“Marc is our starter and he is going to be our starter this week," Shula said. “We’ve just got to give him the opportunity to get better, just as we gave Brodie [Croyle] that opportunity. Spencer [Pennington, the Tide’s backup quarterback] has some experience, and that helps, but Marc is our guy and I want to make sure he knows I’ve got every bit of confidence in him."

Shula stresses positives after loss

If Coach Shula had no confidence in Mark Guillon then Spencer Pennington or some other player would be out on the field. During a game you go with the flow of what is working.

Crimson, Shula does not have the utmost confidence in Guillon per the AJC today.

Can't find the article online but am staring at it where Shula talks about Spencer possibly starting due to Guillon's lack of performance last week.

Some AJC article says Shula may start Pennington.

Tuscaloosa News quotes Shula as saying he is going to start Guillion.

For now, I'll have to stick with Crimson Surfer and the Tuscaloosa News on this one.

I would agree but I still (and maybe I am being a little bit anal) think that Shula does not have the fullest confidence in Guillon.
