Question: So What Should Bama do different on Defense

Overall, I think we need to simplify the defense. We have a bunch of really outstanding athletes on the field, but they seem confused and uncertain about their assignments. That delay or hesitation or missed assignment eliminates any physical advantage you have.

I don't know how to do that, specifically. But Sometimes you just have to let the guys go out there and get after it.
You can't - it won't work. You can change to a different defense, but no NFL defense can be simplified and still be effective. And modern offenses require NFL defenses.

Aaron Suttles made the statement on WJOX that he expects at least one, possibly two coaching changes that happen. Didn't go into detail or allude to which side of the ball.

The first thing we need to do is stay somewhat healthy and that's just from a luck standpoint. With injuries and defections (Anoma and a few others) we were short handed late in the year.

No way that has a legit source. Alabama is recruiting like heck for the next 2 weeks, and Saban won't even hint at a change until the early signers are signed and delivered.

How about keeping the injuries to a minimum. Sometimes it is just not your year. Without the injuries to star athletes, this defense would have been stout! Stay healthy and the defense will be much improved.

I'm not sure I agree with you on this. I've heard several players comment that the defense they ran at Bama was more complex than what they're running in the NFL.

Suttles worked for the Tuscaloosa News and is almost as well connected on the inside as Cecil Hurt. Can he be wrong? Certainly. But the guy isn't one to throw out "off the cuff" speculation.

Hell, if it's only 2.....that would be fantastic. Compared to the last two years, if we get that kind of continuity .... that's tremendous.

I'm guessing if anyone, it's Flood.....

More complex? Who did they play for? The Dolphins?

Think about it - it seems so unlikely that I won't accept it at this point. I am not saying that Alabama is not going to replace any coaches. I am saying that Saban would not be talking about it with anyone right now because it could ruin his recruiting class.

To accept that Suttles has a real source here is to believe that Saban suddenly became an idiot. And who is going to call Suttles out for this right now? Everyone expects Saban to fire someone. Sounds legit. But it feels wrong.

Who said Saban said anything? Who said Saban was going to fire anyone? You may have a coach that has already made to decision to move on of their own volition.

I know this. Suttles was out in front on Lupoi and most of the other coaching changes last year before they became common knowledge. Suttles is always very measured in what he says. He is certainly right about things more often than he his wrong.

Well, we can agree to disagree.

Regarding the thread question about defense:

1. Look at the strength and conditioning program for linebackers and D lineman and see what, if anything, needs changing to help prevent injuries

2. Saban needs to be more involved with the teaching aspect if he thinks his coaches are not teaching it to the right standard.... or get some new coaches (tackling, etc).

3. Get a new DC or someone to be Co DC to help Golding.

4. Get the top recruits Saban really needs/wants instead of letting Clemons, LSU, and UGA get them. I am not sure how he can do this but it would be nice if these players would choose Bama. I know some have and that's great, but we have missed out on a few.

5. Better communication is needed from the sideline to the field during games. Players seem lost too much.

I knew you were going to ask and I'm trying to remember, but I'm not sure. This was a couple of years ago. Ha-Ha, I think - Packers? Landon Collins - Giants. Seems like there were a couple more.

I get more difficult, because they were young and had to learn it from scratch. By the time they get to the NFL, what they learn will come much easier as they were already taught most of it. A lot of NFL players from Alabama have said that. But more complex? That doesn't seem right.

Well, a lot of you have some good points. Therefore, I willthrow my 2 cents into this.
CNS runs a very complicated defense. With that said, Since2009 Rolando McClain (Jr.) ILB (Basically QB for the defense)
We have had either a Sr. or Jr. Running the defense that wasnot only talented but experienced/smart enough to run the defense. With theexception of 2018. Last year we had Jr. Mack Wilson and So. Dylan Moses. WhileMack had been in the system for a while, he struggled getting the Defense intothe proper alignment. Dylan took over those duties (I believe three or fourgame into the season) and struggled. However, in his defense he was only a So. Withlimited experience. In addition, we all know we lost him and McMillian beforethe season even began. In addition, we had a few big misses on ILB’s the pastcouple of years on the recruiting trail. Which compounded the injury loses.
Talent wise Lee and Harris are awesome. Just did not havethe experience that we are accustom to have at ILB.
The sky isn’t falling and CNS defense isn’t out dated. Justsome really bad injuries to some very key personnel. Just look at how many trueFreshmen we had start games throughout the year.
Just my opinion. You can finds all the starters here and seefor yourself. ROLLTIDEROLL!
