Question: so when is the appropriate time to panic if you are a Braves fan

Maddux was a freaking artist.

I go on youtube all the time to watch any highlights I can find of him pitching.

I love clips where he throws his 2-Seamer w/ Sink action that starts waaay off the outside of the plate and at the last millisecond it dive bombs back to catch the outside corner and the batter stands there dumbfounded as the Umps rings him up.....lol

I'm a member of a bunch of MLB and Card collecting groups on FB and anytime something about Maddux gets posted there is a vocal minority that's salty and complaining that he got calls off the plate.

I usually post this.....

He is one of the greatest pitchers of all time. He would still dominate in today's game.

I'll admit right off I'm biased.

But I still think he's Objectively in the Top 5 of All-Time. He's Top 7 at worst if you go by All-Time WAR and remove Clemens who obviously cheated.

But if you take into account how Maddux won 18 Gold Gloves....13 of them were consecutive.... I think that gives him an extra bump.

He was like an extra 5th Gold Glove level Infielder on the mound.

If anyone has some free time today watch this Defensive HIghlights video of Maddux's fielding abilities....

He's out there routinely stabbing comebackers and jumping and diving around like a SS or 2B.

It's CRAZY how athletic he was to look like he did people's taxes on the weekend.

Just an Amazing Pitcher AND Fielder.

Braves come back from the all star break and have a game postponed due to rain then lose 2 of 3 to the Cards

Missed a chance to gain some ground too with Philly going 4-6 in their last 10 games. Of course they are winning today too and we'll be back to 8 games out.

Olson is batting .127 in July btw and I still hate Freddie Freeman and don't want him back.

I hold grudges.

Nope. No panic from me. I've flat out given up on this season.

Can barley watch anyway since MLB basically discourages viewers with their outdated blackout rules.

So much potential with this lineup going into the season and injuries, underperformance have killed it. Such a waste of Max Fried's last year with the team (who's injured again anyway).

It's not like the team is horrible, they'll still make the playoffs as a WC, probably. We just expected so much more, and I don't think we expected the Phillies to be as good as they have been.

It has all just made for a "blah" season.

This could be the best thing for the Braves. Not for this year but maybe for 2025 and beyond. With injuries piling up along with losses, it could move the Braves to “sellers” instead of “buyers” as the trade deadline approaches.

I packed in weeks ago. Question is “has AA packed in now as well?”

yeah, maybe the whole team needed some humble pie. No playoffs. No MVP or other awards. Show them they cannot just mail it in and win a division or make the playoffs. I am fine with not making the post season this year if it means better years 2025 and beyond.

Right now the Braves are still playoff bound (top WC team in the NL with a 4 game lead), I doubt AA becomes a seller.

I saw a thread on reddit that asked why was baseball so boring this year. The OP said something just feels off across the league and I kind of agree. Some comments proposed that the new playoff format has killed the drive to win since 40% of the teams make the postseason now. There is no need to strive to win 100 games when 80 can get you in the playoffs. So they are willing to rest guys more and not wear everyone out. Plus, since teams that get the first round bye have struggled, comments theorized that maybe teams feel better about getting a WC slot.

I watch very little baseball this time of year because of the playoff field expansion. It just means nothing.

I agree that the key to winning a WS is to go into the playoffs hot and stay that way, and clinching early hurts that. But this Braves team is too thin across the board to make a run. They will likely get in and get knocked out immediately.

I am in the group that has watched less baseball this year. I think it might be the extended playoffs as well. Something has just been off all year. Maybe we need another shutdown of sports to make me miss it? The one thing that 2020 did was restore my love of the sport.

Win about as many as you lose and that gets you in the playoffs. Think about that for a minute. Think we’ve minimized the value of the regular season with this new playoff format?

The idea was the new format would increase interest by fans because more teams would be in contention late into the season. It appears to have done the opposite. Just be mediocre through the regular season and you still have a shot.

the same thing is going to (is) happening to college football.
