Some Context (regarding coach DeBoer’s start)

Given CKD basic “coach speak” press conference on Monday, then Sheridan’s kind of “snarky” response to the jump shot action on the QB sneak (“their is nothing we run on the field we do not practice”’ paraphrase) and now Shepherd’s 18 targets of Ryan Williams as “he (Milroe) was throwing it where he was suppose to” (once again paraphrasing) I get the distinct impression these guys are circling the wagons. I get the feeling these guys have never in their careers faced the scrutiny (rightly or wrongly) they are getting here. They just seem very uncomfortable having to explain performance issues and preparation and play calling.

Sheridan was fired from Indiana for being a bad offensive coordinator, hopefully Deboer steps up after this season and hires some solid, experienced coordinators

Yes... we need review and correction of lots of things. I hope we can make sure our coaching is solidified and get a good portal haul and move towards a real DeBoer team next year...

Every day (in person, not on here) I talk to somebody who inevitably points out that Saban went 7-6 his first year at Bama. That argument (in defense of Deboer) holds NO water whatsoever. I am surprised that people think that Saban going 7-6 in year one WAY back in 2007 is the same thing as Deboer not having a great first year. Saban inherited one of the biggest disasters in college football history. It's a wonder he did as good as 7-6 in 2007 with that dysfunctional mess. Did Deboer inherit a disaster left by Saban? Ohh...that argument really grinds my gears

Well... I don't think DeBoer inherited a clean slate for sure... but agreed. Saban inherited a reasonably good group of players, but very average talent.

of all the times I’ve seen you talk about this, I’ve still yet to see who we should’ve/could’ve hired to run that D.

*Nick Saban* couldn’t hire guys as far back as 2018 to come in to run Nick Saban’s defense
Well, I'm not getting paid millions of dollars a year to figure that out. I have said I would hire Pruitt in the least as a consultant and perhaps as a analyst, both shouldn't be affected by show cause, and that would give them both one of the best defensive minds in college football but also arguably the best mind to run Saban's defense (#1 at FSU and Alabama) to use as a resource. You also have Saban to bounce questions off of as well.

There was some talk of retaining Travaris Robinson as a DC and making him the play caller, he's done that before but I'm not sure he was the best for the job either. I mean in all fairness, I wanted Dan Lanning as head coach, and he was both under Saban and Smart so I'm sure he could have figured it out.

But, I'm just saying if I was in the position and I'm trying to figure out how to make things work, keeping Saban's defense in place, and as much of the defensive staff (still was a top 20 scoring defense) really just makes the job easier. You don't have to teach players a new system, you don't have to worry too much on the defensive side because it wasn't broken (top 20 scoring defense) so DeBoer could focus primarily on his area of expertise, offense. Then, in year two you could re-evaluate things.

Either way, we don't really know how well this switch works until later in the year. If it's a top 20 defense, it will quiet my concerns a bit. It is not at this point in time.

He’s right about being robbed with the calls in that place. Before the days of instant replay it was a lot worse.
It's funny that you say that because I think instant replay has made officiating a lot worse. I mean a lot. I wish they would give coaches three challenges per game. If their challenge is wrong, it costs them a timeout. The replay booth gets 20 seconds to review it. If it is obvious, that is more than enough. Make the call and move on with the game.

Seems to me they're just intent on not throwing the players under the bus to the media. I respect the heck out of that. I don't think it's anything to read too much into

Yup..Whoever is calling the plays needs too understand, too win in The SEC, you have too a dominant running game or at least a strong running game that helps control
the clock & LOS..

It helps the defense too stay fresh & strong all game long, it will open the playbook up & passing game as well, you can still pass as much as you want..

As long as you keep the defense honest, running the ball as well, instead of pinning their ears back bum rushing Jalen Milroe every play..

Unfortunately, it seems like Grubb leaving to go to the NFL was a bigger deal than most had realized.

When I see wide open receivers running open and we go three and out or throw a pick, I'm not inclined to blame the OC. It drives OC's nuts when players don't execute plays that literally have multiple WR's wide the crap open and the QB keeps "not seeing" them. Remember the in game shot of Tommy Rees with his face in his hands in utter frustration? My guess is that is Nick Sheridian with JM.

Would you say that Deboer inherited more of a rebuild than a "hop in and drive for awhile" kind of scenario? If it's the latter, then maybe we are still sitting at 5-2 with losses to Vanderbilt and tennessee even if Saban was still around

Most definitely. You could debate the finer points and get different opinions, but we have some holes. JM is limited, our defense is patchwork in the secondary and our front 6 have struggled. I don't think our OL is really all that great either.

There are a number of things I'd like DeBoer to pick up and run with along the same lines as Coach Saban's process, but I could see the record being similar.

Our OL's have been overrated from 2021-2024.

Yeah... Grubb would probably be better... But he can't make JM see the field either.
This. People complaining about Sheridan weren't complaining when the offense was humming against UGA.

Funny how when the QB actually reads the field and accurately makes the throws the OC is a genius, but when he doesn't the OC is an idiot.

I feel bad in retrospect for being so critical of Rees.

He tried to make some adjustments around the Tenn game last year and they worked for about 3 weeks and teams shut us down again with the exception of UGA who played a flawed scheme.

But what Sheridan has been doing looks a lot like what Rees was doing because JM regresses under pressure and when teams take away what he does best.

We are running different route trees that have been getting WRs and TEs open all over the field and it hasn’t mattered.

We don’t have an OC problem other than maybe picking bad times to try trick plays.

I have a feeling if Grubb were here, those same people would be saying Grubb can't handle the SEC and we need to fire him. It really doesn't matter who our OC is right now. A lot of the issues will sort themselves when we get a QB who can run our true offense. I think someone posted the other day that DeBoer said he hadn't even installed half the offense yet

We have at least 1 right now on the sideline.

Had 2 others but they are in Pittsburgh and Ohio.
