Since I'm home during the day for a couple of weeks while I pull an overnight remodel job, I'm watching and listening to some national sports shows. There seems to be a groundswell of support, however small, for Ndamukong Suh and Toby Gerhart in the Heisman race. I'm wondering if people are starting to pay more attention to the numbers and not look solely at a guy that plays for an undefeated team. We've seen in the past a guy win and seems it was basically because he was the most recognizable name on an elite team.

Out West, I could see Gerhart winning the votes. I could see Midwest guys voting for Suh, but many may still vote for McCoy since he hasn't 'gotten his' yet. Guys in the South should be mostly Ingram, I think. Don't know how the guys up North and East will vote.

Will Suh and Gerhart get enough votes to help or hurt Ingram?

It's going to be a very regional vote.

Hopefully, Suh and Gerhart take votes away from McCoy. Hopefully, Ingram did enough to take some votes from Tebow, and maybe a few from McCoy.

Spiller is a wild card.

forgot about Spiller....though I haven't seen a huge push for him, he'll get a few votes. I absolutely think Ingram took some Tebow votes, and you're right....if Suh and Gerhart steal some McCoy votes, Ingram may bring home the hardware.

Suh's play in that game could very well win it for Ingram, but we will know soon enough...

After seeing Suh in the BigXII championship, I'm not sure he doesn't deserve it.

To me, Tebow is out. His stats were never that great to begin with (by his standards) and his performance in the most important game of the year wasn't good enough.

McCoy is still in it, but by a thread, IMO. I could see them wanting to give it to him for "career achievement" but if this year is the only year that should matter, that BigXII title game really hurt him.

I don't think Ingram could have done anymore for himself than he's done this year. The Auburn game hurt him, but he really made a huge comeback against Florida. He's been great in BAMA's biggest games.

I do think Ingram, Suh, and Gerhart are the top 3 and I'm pulling for Ingram. Even though we Alabama fans have seemed to disdain the Heisman over the years, it'd be nice to finally have a BAMA player win one. And I believe this team is able to overcome the potential distraction.

Well it looks like Ingram indeed faces an uphill battle. Not surprising, but somewhat disappointing.

Not looking good so far, but with only around 100 out of 926 total votes cast, it could change. I hope so.

Just heard one vote cast for Mark for Heisman. Bill King on Rivals Radio cast his vote a little while ago on the air. They played a line or two of Rammer Jammer as he revealed his vote.

I would say that Ingram is a 1 to 3 favorite against the field right now.

Interesting that Suh, a defensive lineman, is getting recognition but the best player on Alabama's team, McClain, is not on this list.

If McClain had sacked Tebow 4.5 times in the SECCG, he would be getting votes, too...

If they want to give it to the most outstanding player in football, then I think it's great. But I will say this, it better start a trend EVERY year from here on out because that hasn't been the case over the past 2 decades. Like it or not, the others in the running have 4 team losses and that's been enough to exclude players in years past.

re: Suh, Gerhart and the Heisman (stiffarmtrophy.com at 3PM CDT has Ingram 2nd)

The tally is on the left is a vote count from actual voters. The projection takes the regional breakdown and extrapolates a final total. NOTE: It's very, very early; the numbers will look wacky for a while.
This is the part of their website I'm paying close attention to right now.

I just don't see how it's possible that guys who didn't win conference championships, and who suffered multiple losses this season, win over someone like Ingram who did what he did on Saturday. Isn't it about the guy who's most valuable to his team in getting them victories? Not saying it should be, but it usually is...

I know not to expect anything, but that's just crazy talk! :D

Oh, and I know that J.Will said "as of 8:53am" this is what it was, but I went to their website, and according to them, the last update was last night at 11:30 my time (cali). Things might have already changed quite a bit for all we know. I'll be checking that site out for sure.

no, that's the MVP. The Heisman is supposed to be awarded to the best football player. Nothing says an MVP (I know that's not an actual college award) can't win a Heisman, but to me, based on the intent of the Heisman, the best college football player may not actually be the MVP. As I interpret it, the best college football player in the country may not necessarily play on an undefeated or championship team. But those are my words......

Except for McCoy. If Ingram comes in second to McCoy, I have no complaints. He is the best player (by far) on a team in the BCSCG.

If it goes to Suh, I wouldn't be all that upset. I love seeing defensive players get recognized, and Suh is one of the best defensive players in recent memory.

I would only be upset if it went to Gerhart...

Awfully hard to dictate sarcasm in posts in posts on this board, ain't it? :)

Of course you're right, and that's what I believe, as well. Past history, at least in my opinion, would show that the Heisman has been more of an MVP award.

That's all I'm saying. I agree with the above that if it does indeed go to the right player this year (and I'm not completely convinced it's not Ingram anyway, but that's probably another long debate) then I hope it sets a new precedent for these things.
