Guys, you've got to stop the denigration of others' posts.

Disagree all you want. But don't call another post or poster or their position, "stupid" or "ludicrous" or anything of the sort.

Say you don't understand the logic and politely ask the poster to explain. Say you see the issue differently and present your own logic.

But stop with the bashing of posts and / or posters. It took a while and some unpleasant actions to get that toned down on the NSPR board, but we finally made good progress there. We still have plenty of debate, but the nastiness and rancor are way down, and the quality of the debate is much higher.

We as a Mod team learned from that effort. The primary lesson being that some people are just hard-wired to view an opposing opinion as a personal insult coming from an obviously inferior human being who has equally obvious mental impairments.

We can't fix people who think that way. We can fix what they are able to post on TideFans.

On the Football board, recent warnings and reminders haven't worked as well as we would have liked. With the season approaching, consider this a last chance reminder.

Debate all you want. That's what TideFans is for. Just don't bash. If you can't refrain from that, there will be no further begging....we'll handle it for you.

Quick question. Is replying "MOO" to a brand new poster consider bashing??
Within reasonable limits, no.

If MOO becomes the go-to way of expressing disagreement, we’ll revisit.

And before somebody asks, “reasonable” is in the mind of the Moderator.

BamaNation, Crimsonaudio and Tide-Hsv hold the rest of the mod team to a standard of reasonableness, and we all serve at BamaNation’s pleasure. If they feel that a mod is being unreasonable, they can fix that easily.

Put another way, if you have to ask whether you’re being reasonable, you’re probably not.

Aw man, and right when I had the perfect comeback that involved asserting one's simian ancestry. Oh well, there's always X.....

It's a small mind that bashes other people in trying to make themselves look good...
It’s not necessary to make themselves look good, it can be about saying something the wrong way.

I said something someone said was stupid, because it was.

But that probably crossed the line.

I could have said it was ill-advised and that would theoretically be acceptable.

Some referred to bashing people as “childish”…is that comment bashing people? I don’t think so but I guess it could be.

Is your “small mind” comment bashing?

Seems to me some would say yes and some would say no.

But perhaps it’s because you said it generically and not directly to one poster?

To me it’s more like the difference between what I would say in court as opposed to what I would say about the same topic sitting at a bar.

I will commit to being more mindful and more professional here.

I’m no saint either…part of why I slowed down.

Honestly I didn’t read it that way. I think what you described is typical behavior on a public sports forum. Usually people reel it in after a few posts because both parties get to explain their POV and clarify their positions. It’s far easier for most to explain by talking than writing so it might take 1-3 extra attempts for two sides to understand what the other’s position really is. I’m guilty of it myself.

Yes in some cases it starts that way and evolves. But ultimately I read the OP more as directed at 3-5 posters who have been given a considerable long latitude with the underhanded insults over the years. Ones that constantly get threads shut down because they purposely try to cause SECrant like chaos on the forum or specifically target posters they don’t like to try to get them banned for more blatant rule breaking responses to their insults that toe the line of the rules. There is a reason that some long time posters post more on NS these days than the FB thread, and it really has nothing to do with it being more fun.

I consider this more of a way to weed out problems than to punish typical forum discussions. I think the original intent was that people would just use the “ignore” button and it would solve the problem but ultimately the mods found out it doesn’t so they are mirroring the NS model in which the 3-4 mods that police over there started going after every post that contributed nothing more than to incite a response or was more locker room snickering. They usually let you have your way in discussions as long as it isn’t demeaning towards a person(s) and contributes to the conversation. And if kind of toe the line unintentionally they usually give you a warning unless it’s just something you are constantly doing or the original one is just clearly out of bounds. So I wouldn’t really worry as much about the “I was saying this generally but someone took it the wrong way” posts unless it was really over the top. I think they are more trying to avoid stuff that locks threads of results in hours of them deleting multiple pages of posts. And those generally are posts that offer nothing, and are specifically designed to cause chaos and disruption.
