really good article on alabama and minn in the tennessean today. talking about the return of townsend to nashville, he played at brentwood high school. excellent rusher, but, no scholarship offers. tenn wanted him to walk on, but he chose alabama, and he has been getting a lot of reps for this game. coach shula, thinks the young man can be a good one, he gives a complete effort all the time, and has the speed to the outside, and is not afraid to run inside. at 172 pounds, true freshman needs to be tough, expected to play a lot. says darby is only at 30 percent. the minn duo of running backs are the only duo in ncaa history to rush each for over 1000 yards back to back seasons.

Ex-BA star Townsend may take field for Alabama

A rash of injuries has resulted in the former Brentwood Academy star, who walked on at Alabama after not being recruited by any Division I-A teams, possibly playing in his first collegiate game against Minnesota in Friday's Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl.

The plan was to redshirt Townsend, but he'll be wearing a red shirt with a white number on it if Darby can't play.

It's a bittersweet possibility for Townsend.

''If I'm needed I'll be ready,'' he said.

I want us to win the bowl game as bad as anyone else, but taking the redshirt off of Theo for the last game of the season is ludicrous. I love the spirit and willingness to jump in of this kid, but please put Shula in a straight jacket if he actually goes through with this. As shown this year by the string of injuries, we need as much depth as possible for the next few years until we can get back where we are supposed to be. With Darby, Johns, and Townsend, among others back for next year, the future is bright for the crimson and white!!!! Roll Tide Roll!!!

I agree HSV. The guy is freshman walk-on. With Sharrief, Coffee, and Upchruch/Simpson coming in, this will probably be the only time Townsend will ever see the field. There is a reason Coach Shula makes the decisions and not the posters on this board.

I, too, hate to see the redshirt come off for just one game, but, from the young man's perspective, at least he has an opportunity to show the world what he's got. I know what I'd give to be able to wear the Crimson just one game....or just one minute.
