MENTONE, Alabama -- Hundreds of former customers of Mentone Springs Hotel and the White Elephant antique mall took to social media Saturday night and this morning to mourn the loss of both businesses, which were destroyed by fire.
Named one of The New York Times' "1,000 Places to Visit Before You Die," the 130-year-old Mentone Springs was one of Alabama's oldest hotels. The inn was built in 1884 by Dr. Frank Caldwell of Pennsylvania, who named the hotel after Mentone in France after his daughter saw news reports of Queen Victoria visiting there.
No one was injured in the blaze. Authorities have not yet determined what caused the massive fire.
