I'll probably get flamed for this big time, but here goes. It's a black vs. white issue. Look at Birmingham since Richard Arrington became mayor in 1979 and compare that to the rise of the suburbs. Birmingham has turned into a "chocolate city" and the white money isn't going to support it.

Hmmm.. I don't see any flames. Could there be a measure of truth to what you say? Unfortunately, too many are afraid of speaking the truth out of fear of reprisal or being labeled a racist.

Lately, I've noticed a change in the news. Normally, I watch ABC 33/40 out of Birmingham and, unless it's a high-profile state wide case, the majority of the headlines are African American violence and they're coming out of Birmingham. Let me state that I don't believe this is a characteristic of any particular race, but is a characterisitc of an economic class. Blacks in Birmingham, illegal hispanics, rural whites (how about those meth labs?!). The fact is, Birmingham's glory days are over and will be until you get Bernie the Clown out of office, Shiela Smoot & Larry "Vison Man" Lankford off the county commission, and get more people with money living in the city proper.

Lately, I've noticed a change in the news. Normally, I watch ABC 33/40 out of Birmingham and, unless it's a high-profile state wide case, the majority of the headlines are African American violence and they're coming out of Birmingham. Let me state that I don't believe this is a characteristic of any particular race, but is a characterisitc of an economic class. Blacks in Birmingham, illegal hispanics, rural whites (how about those meth labs?!). The fact is, Birmingham's glory days are over and will be until you get Bernie the Clown out of office, Shiela Smoot & Larry "Vison Man" Lankford off the county commission, and get more people with money living in the city proper.

I'm going to take it one step further, a step which may result in the hounds of hatred barking at my feet. I think as a general rule, blacks in Birmingham want what is best for their city. The problem is they keep voting with a racist eye. They continually vote for blacks just because they are black. They give no consideration whatsoever to the qualifications of the person running for office, or what these individuals, if and when elected, might do for or even to their city. They set the color of a person's skin as a litmus test to receiving their votes and support, because they believe that a person of color is going to treat other persons of color favorably if not preferentially. They fail to realize that corruption and crime are color blind, and that criminals could care less about their victims race, national origin or religion. Therefore those who trust their own color simply because of color find themselves hoodwinked on a regular basis.
Maybe some day the citizens of Birmingham will open their eyes and see past their own faults. They will elect someone based on experience, success and vision of the future. If they can shed the chains of their own self-imposed hatred and racial bondage, they can also achieve an equal footing with others who long ago chose to ignore the color of skin. Then and only then will the black community be able to honestly sing "Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty, we're free at last".

The comment about criminals not favoring their own race was particularly timely. A friend of mine is a VP in a big bank up here. One of their largest customers is a virulently rasist major developer here in Bhm. Apparently he owned Jeffco commissoner Jeff Germany - boasted often and loudly about it. Germany did whatever this old mossbank told him to do. I bet that a toady of a charter member of the KKK was really interested in helping out the blacks in Bhm, right? Anyway that will now change now that Germany is joining McNair as a guest of the state.

And an appropriate overture to crime being color blind is that hopefully so is the state's penal system. It's quite likely that ex Governor Don Seigelman will soon join in the company of McNair and Germany. You cannot teach honesty to men of this age and generation. So may they learn other lessons during their incarceration, the most valuable being humilty. May they all be forever barred from public office.
