The Future of Alabama Basketball and Anthony Grant

Let me remind you "new" posters on this side today that this is for a "constructive" discussion. Rants will be dealt with.

My Auburn co-workers speculated that they fired their coach so quickly to try and beat us to the punch in going after Bruce Pearl.

I don't think Bruce Pearl is on the AD's Radar, if there is a change made. I'd rather lose with a chance of having a better team, than to have to explain another Bruce Pearl BBQ to the NCAA.

Bruce Pearl cannot take a job until after August 2014. He is still under show cause. If the barn is going after him, they'll have to wait.

I for one MISS CMG, i said it then and I'll say it now WE SHOULD OF KEPT HIM. Ok, now thats out of the way, we need a new coiach badly.. Our team has the Poorest offensive scheme I think Ive ever seen.. CAG can't keep our best players, and the ones he recruits are a joke.. Engstrom and Randolph in particular.. I can do nothing but laugh when i watch the 7 foot swede get out rebounded by a 6 ft 4 sf.. Randolphs skills arnt that impressive either, the kid can barely make a layup. What I wouldn't give for a T mitchell power slam and a J green post move.. This has been the first time in my life Ive tried not to watch bama basketball, its way to painstaking. I think we should FIRE grant and go after Bruce pearl before the barn does... Forget the 4 or 5 million buyout, we have the money. CBP could turn our program around and doing so would cover his new contract, and CAG buyout.. No guts nO glory...

You're right. We should have kept the guy with off the court issues. Who cares how he embarrasses his alma mater.

I wish I thought it will get better next year, but losing our best player makes it hard for me to think we can be better . No real front court depth next year .

We should find out today whether CAG has a next year or not. I feel sure a meeting is happening today regarding the program between CAG and BB. I honestly do not think they make a move this year so unless CAG decides to move on, we are going to maintain the status quo for 1 more year.

I see the players are lining up to defend him and it is to their credit they didn't just pack it in midway through the season, but the results speak for themselves. I heard part of Passink this morning defending him as well. It will be interesting to hear Chris Stewart's take on the state of the program.

I saw this coming at the end of last season, and while I didn't I think it would be this bad, it was not unexpected. CAG is either going to have to find a way to let his players play on offense or he'll be looking for work at the end of next year. Anyone who expects we'll suddenly turn a corner I am afraid wil be sorely dissapointed. I just don't see a bunch of freshman making us that much better. We still haven't seen who may transfer since we seem to have a major cog every year move on to greener pastures. Keeping Hale may be the most important recruiting we can do this year. Who is going to be the leader next year?

I don't know about Pearl, but the Barbee firing definitely puts added pressure on Grant, and Battle.

I don't want Bruce Pearl for other reasons. I believe he's an overrated coach. He never won the league or tourney. His best NCAA was a sweet 16 (while @ UT). He had a sub 500 record against all their rivals including us. He's a good coach not a great one. Add to this a NCAA violations. I don't see what the fuss is about. He's not an elite level coach.

I don't want Pearl at UA either but I disagree that he is not a good coach. Here is a quote from an article on al.com:

"Pearl led Tennessee to six straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including an Elite Eight finish and back-to-back Sweet Sixteen appearances during his six-year stay with the Volunteers."

That's pretty impressive in my book and doesn't even consider the success he had as a coach prior to the UT job.

He wore us out in the tourney the year before UT hired him. CMG is still butthurt from that one. Teams always had career 3pt days against us under CMG. They REALLY had a career day in that Pearl led tourney blow out.

First, that team had some great SEC talent with Davidson, Davis, R. Steele, Winston, and Shelton. Heck, I still put my Earnest Shelton nesting doll Christmas ornament on my tree every year!

Second, the new "Battle Plan" is out in support of CAG. Looks like at least one more year!

All we can do as fans is support our teams in the good times as well as the bad. I do not necessarily agree with Battle, but Bama is my team through thick and thin.

Frankly if we do not win big next year, we are sending the message that it is OK with the PTB to field a substandard team in basketball. We'll be Auburn and a perennial bottom dweller if we do not change the culture that is now pervasive throughout the program.
