The game from a Hog's perspective

I think we all know Mallett looks awesome. He will probably end up putting some Big 12 QB numbers up thanks to Petrino's offense. What you might have noticed from last year though, is that each Big 12 QB that lived by their QB also died by it (and by bowl time people realized the Big 12 wasn't as good as they looked putting up video game passing numbers on each other). Ryan looks great and he is great. However, Alabama is a balanced team and Arkansas isn't.

If Alabama makes some bonehead mistakes and if Mallett plays a mistake free game then Arkansas can beat Alabama. However, If Alabama plays with the level of domination they have had so far (and doesn't shoot themselves in the foot) this one won't even be close. McElroy could easily end up outdoing Mallett in this game once it's all said and done. It doesn't mean McElroy is better, but Mallett hasn't tried throwing on Alabama either.

Arkansas is 2nd in passing offense and Alabama is 36. Alabama is 13th in passing defense and Arkansas is 90th.

If you consider Arkansas's strength is their passing and Alabama's strength if their rushing defense (2nd) and offense (5th), things don't look good for Arkansas.

I'll agree that Mallet is a big time QB but I don't believe he should be considered untested, Ark has a big time offensive guru for a HC, and if Ark can get Bama to make a couple of mistakes like special teams and fumbles or int's or TD killing penalties then Bama will be in for a bad day. I have every bit of confidence that Coach Saban will have the Tide ready to play. Saturday, I agree, will answer a lot of questions. Hog fan friend of mine told me yesterday that Mallet will do what FIU and Utah did to Bama and Coach Petrino has had them watching 08 Sugar Bowl game film since forever. I told him "heck, ya'll might as well stay home and just give you the win, it's plain we don't stand a chance".

With Mallet's height and accuracy, when he has time, it looks like he can pick you apart. That said, whenever GA got pressure on him, not so much.

The key to this game for Arkansas is their OL. If they can give Mallet time to throw --- for the entire game --- they've got a chance. This is going to have to be a high-scoring shootout for Arky to have a chance.

Stamina and conditioning are going to play a huge role in this game as well.

To me, a tell-tale sign from the Hogs game Saturday night was that, with the game on the line in the fourth quarter, Mallet completed 2 of 8 passes for 29 yards, was sacked once and forced to run twice. Arkansas scored just three points in the fourth and lost the game.

Contrast that to McElroy in the 4th quarter of the VT. With the game on the line, he went 2/5 for 85 yards and a TD, leading Bama from a one point deficit to a ten point victory (outscoring the Hokies 18-7). You can talk stats all day long; but those are the things that really tell the story.

Just sayin' . . .

Hog, I think the post above that you are treating this as a QB battle is apropos. It's not that at all. If the question is can Mallet, plus your best other 21 players beat McElroy and our 21 best players, the answer is "very probably not." (To simplify, we won't get into Bama's superior depth.) All three of our opponents have gone into the game with "make the QB beat us." And he's done it. He doesn't have to be better than Mallet. He just has to make our total O&D be better than your O&D. If he does that, and we don't self-destruct on ST and penalties, then we win. You seem to dismiss GMac as a factor. You might take a look at this article on his performance at the Manning Camp (and notice who else was there). Tuberville did attend and in, a later interview, said something to the effect that the rest of the SEC was going to be shocked... LINK

Earle, you must be an attorney or something :) (Forgive me if I'm wrong)

You have a way of saying exactly what the point is, and driving it home, without actually saying it....lol

Your post is very accurate in my opinion. This isn't a QB battle. It's about those who surround the QB's.

And, as I posted earlier, we're better at every other position on the field than Arkansas is.

I'm not so sure we're not at least equal behind the center but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

At any rate, good post, and I'm saying 28-21 Bama at the half.

63-28 final.

sip

Hogs offense against Bama defense......Bama offense against Hogs defense. Make your call. :cool2: It is not about "well Mallet has done this or McElroy has done this" plain and simple it is about who is going to dominate. IMHO.

I think this game is going to be a blowout early on and BAMA will get off to a fast start. Arkansas O will need a few drives to figure out what is going on and BAMA O is going to be efficient initially, but I think Mallett will figure out the BAMA D and they will make a big comeback and BAMA will make a few mistakes and hold on for dear life.

But I hope this is a blowout like everyone else seems to think..... If the BAMA pass rush has no problem hitting Mallett all game (or knocks him out of the game), that's the only way I see this being a blow out.

Welcome to the board, I think what will win the day for Bama will be what many posters have said. The balanced Bama offense. I think we will run it effectively on you guys and keep Mallett and company on the sidelines. It will be a good game and I expect nothing but Arkansas best effort.

***I hate that I cant post from work...but this board often gets me from 8-5 without losing my mind...Ive been following this thread all day***

Its good to see the piggies on the board. I mean its like they came out of the wood work. I am glad to see it and hope that all the piggies post respectively and stick around. I hope to see Arkansas finish second in the West this year. For the most part, any team who has colors similar to ours is cool with me!

Ive seen some score predictions thrown out there. Let me just say this...If Arky pigs score 27 or better as a result of their offensive production, Coach Saban is going to one angry camper, win or lose. I think there will be a very personal challenge bestowed upon our defense to shut arky pigs down completely.

We may get a ton of yardage on the ground on Saturday against the Arkansas defense, but to say that we can run on anyone when we've really only played one good opponent is just silly. Do we have a good running game? Sure. But, "anyone"?? I can't make that claim yet.

Many of us have had faith in McElroy since the strong showing in the Spring, and he has done nothing to make me feel like he isn't ready. On the contrary, he has surprised almost the entire Bama fan base with how well he has done.

I do have to point out that the ONE interception McElroy threw was when he got hit as he was throwing the ball - still an INT, but it's not like he slinging the ball around like Jarret Lee

I wouldn't say that's just as effective as Mallet considering he's thrown twice as much as McElroy has, and besides VaTech, UNT and FIU aren't exactly bell ringers. Mallet hasn't thrown an INT yet, and torched an SEC defense for over 400 yards and 5 td's.

Virginia Tech has been a top ten defense for a decade straight, and McElroy had one heck a game against them. I would say that FIU and NT are far better competition than Missouri State. Georgia has been known to be soft on defense since Brian VanGorder left four years ago. That wasn't a great defense Mallet faced. I'm sure he'll have success at times, but he's going to be under pressure like at no other point going foward.

I will go ahead and guarantee that we won't win this year 49-14.......well.....almost guarantee.

I've seen some things out of our defensive backs that lead me to believe that (if given the time....."If!") Mallet could throw for a good bit against us and give us some problems. Having said that, if we stay true to form, then we should win this game by anywhere from 10-20 points. Should be a good one though. rtr

Therein lies their problem IMO. I understand why Arkansas fans are excited about their offense (and they should be), the problem is if it were enough for them to win they would have beaten Georgia. They didn't lose to Georgia because of their offense, no they lost because of their defense. Combine that with the fact that they'll be facing a much, much better defense along with an equally if not more potent offense and it doesn't look good for them, at least on paper. Time will tell if the game plays out the way it looks on paper.

Guys I'm worried sick about your running game....based solely upon what I saw against VaTech. I see Upchurch will return and that - alone - scares the crap out of me. He blasted would-be tacklers against VT and we have quite a few "would-be" tacklers. Then, there is Ingram and others....

Conventional wisdom says Mallett won't have time to throw and it is hard to argue against that. But, I will say this......Mallett - so far - has not made bad decisions. He will take a sack or throw the ball away. If he can connect on 4 or 5 big plays, we are in the game. Bottom line, though, is we have to have some semblance of a running game or it's over in a hurry. And, I have some doubts about our OLine.

Should be fun.

I noticed that 77 yards rushing Arkie had against UGA. Alabama will have 3 different players with at least 80 vs the Hogs... And, if Arkansas has to rely on Mallet that much, the Bama defense will eat his lunch.. Sorry bro, I don't see Bama winning this one by less than 20...

I think we can all agree that the Piggies hopes for a victory lie in Mallett's right arm. Unfortunately for Mallett, he's going to have to pay a physical price for whatever success he has. He had better come out of the chute hitting on all cylinders because as the game wears on, he's gonna take a beating and about halfway through the 3rd quarter, it's going to start telling on him and he'll start making mistakes trying to avoid more punishment. Plus, our running game is gonna wear down the Arkansas defense as the game goes on.

Barring some freakish happenings, I see us pulling away in the 2nd half.

I wouldn't put much stock in the fact that Upchurch is dressing out. His ankle won't be 100%. He has flashes of brilliance, but his most significant contribution has been pass protection blocking.

I don't think your fears are unfounded, however. Familiarize yourself with the "others" you mention - as ZZ Top would say, #3 Trent Richardson is about to go "Nationwide."

Couldn't have said it better myself. No doubt Bama has the better team, but if Ark's offense plays like it did Saturday, and defense can cut down Bama's scoring to 30, I think Arkansas has a very good chance to win this game.

I've heard nothing but good things about McElroy, but to say that Mallet is the un-proven qb in this game is silly. He's being touted at the top quarterback for the NFL draft out of the SEC. Draft Nasty :: Corey Chavous reveals SEC's No. 1 NFL QB prospect -- it's not Tebow

Partner I dont post much but your in a Arky Dream Love Affair if you dont believe Bama wins this game by 4 TD's or more. Mallet's a good player but at this point of his college career, he is not on the same level as Gmac. Bama has serious depth, especially on Defense. This is a classic Sec blowout in my opinion. From my view Arky=Auburn and that my friend means a smackdown this Saturday.
