This guy deserves a round of applause. If u think our defense is good this year, next year it will be insane!!

I agree. I think we should drive a 2005 National Championship campaign. We will have a great defense and great skill positions on offense. Look out if our OL is a goody! The players will feel confidence if we start this right away. What do you say?

I believe Joe's experience is helping Shula tremendously this year.

I read somewhere that Kines was on Perkins staff when Shula was the quarterback. Does anyone know the details or if this is true? :BigA:

Lets wait until there is a Senior QB and a opponent that has the arguably the best Offensive coordinator in the league Al bourgeious on the field. I am a Alabama fan through and through and the Defense have played remarkable well. But Auburn will be a test. If we have a chance to win against Auburn and LSU with the defense then i will change my tune. IMHO

Joe kines is a 7, 8, or 9 win coach. We need a National Title Defensive coach.

Bama Leads Nation in Three Defensive Categories

Bama # 1 in Total Defense

Bama # 1 in Pass Defense

Bama # 1 in Pass Efficiency Defense

Bama's Ranking Summary

Are u kidding?????

a national defensive title coach? I want u to name one of them? Joe Kines has the no. 1 defense in the nation, is he better than them?

What are you smoking? He is coaching a team that has only 68 scholarships! Give me a break.

I think...

we're around 78 at the present time, but, of those, only 68 were originally recruited scholarshipped players. The rest are walkons who've been awarded schollies. We were restricted to 80 on scholarship at any given time until this year...

I'm not saying about the team itself. They playing as well as they can... But i just don't see Joe kines getting us to National title game at all. Like i said we have a 9 win coach. Shula on the other hand i think can do much better than Kines.

Wolfpac,

You're the one who is missing the point. Alabama's defensive line is thin and is relying on walk-ons (Rudy Griffin) and guys recruited only by Tulsa (Mark Anderson) to get the job done. They're getting the job done, too. Who coached them up?

Take Alabama's secondary in 2004 and compare it to the 1992 defense. Take a look at the individual players. I'd wager not one of the 2004 starters would start on the 1992 defense. Peprah and Harper would probably displace Eric Turner and Michael Ausmus as reserve safeties. But Alabama is ranked highly against the pass. Who coached them up?

Add to this the fact that Kines is doing this without the benefit of hardly any offensive help in keeping the opposition off the field. For that matter, our defensive statistics have actually improved once we got into the meat of the schedule and away from Utah State and Western Carolina.

There is no evidence to suggest Kines is "just a 9 win coach." I think it's time for you to admit you came into 2004 with a preconceived notion about what Kines was and wasn't, and you can't stand having to admit you made a mistake. I doubt Alabama will finish the year tops in three major defensive categories, but so what? There are three undefeated teams at the top of the polls tonight and none of them has the #1 defense in the country -- Alabama does. They're doing it with lesser defenses. The big point re: Kines is how much improvement Alabama has made from 2003 to 2004. It's very similar to improvements under Torbush from 2001 to 2002.

I'd also caution people against going to a coaching wish list before there's an opening. Did Jimbo Fisher suddenly go from genius to dunce at LSU? His stats say he did. Same thing for DC Eric Schumann at Tulane. Those are a couple of your top "national" coaches last year.

At any rate, it's not going to matter whether Shula can do better than Kines or not; there's not going to be a change made there unless Kines leaves voluntarily.

YOU DO NOT become the number one Defense in the Nation because you have a second rate coach. Coach Kines can flatout coach. His years of experience and knowledge have allowed this Defense to help the Offense recover from major loses due to injuries. I do not agree with your assessment of Coach Kines. You can not be the Number #1 Defense in the Nation with a 7, 8, or 9 win coach. It is impossible. :biga:

the lsu and the barn games

will be a true test of kines greatness (or lack there of). sure we have the #1 defense against for the most part questionable talent but we sit at 5-3. (before everyone starts screaming about the viles please see the barn) as the president says "you can run but you can't hide"....look at joe kines career record and then speak with the folks from the dawg nation about joe. having said that i have to say that i am suprised at how good the D has played up to this point and i hope and pray it continues. i'd like to see kines stay on at Bama in some kind of front office capacity but not as DC. while we are going through this "opportunity phase" seems after the season end would be the time to make some "youthful" changes :)

i hope that the D continues to improve and that we have "goose eggs" our next "4" games. take out a game program and read up on CJK bio  he's a great person and has value to the program but not as the long term DC. i just don't believe that he will elevate the D to the NC level.....and if i am wrong i'd be more than happy to eat crow for however long is needed :)

Keep Him!

I for one, are one of last seasons Joe Kines blasters. After what he has done this year, with the little bit of talent he has at the capstone. I am convinced that he will only do better with real "blue chip" talent.

Wait and see we will play LSU and Auburn close. We may not win, but our 'D' will give us the opprtunities.

Keep the man.......he has done something special with limited talent!!

lots of that in loxley....JK

about CJK i hope i'm wrong. he had all the talent in the world at geogia and well you know the rest of the story. for the record i hope we NEVER allow a point to be scored on us again. 4-9 last season probably 7-5 this season. with all our schollys back i'd say 9-3 next season. time will tell. :biga:
