The SEC should invite Missouri

The SEC should consider inviting Missouri if for no other reason to test the Big 12's resolve. They are in a weakened state right now and lets face it they along with the Big 10 would jump at the chance to deal the SEC a death blow. Seeing Texas craw back to the Pac 10 and getting rejected would be like winning the championship all over again.:biggrin2:

Well, the trouble with it all is everyone has backed down for fear of being labeled the entity that broke up college football.

But I guarantee you if the Big Ten or the SEC offered Missouri they'd bolt in a heartbeat. Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Kansas, K-State, and Baylor all would as well.

I don't like Mizzou in the SEC, not really a geographical fit
Well they do share a border with Arky, Kentucky, and Tennessee so there are worse fits tossed around recently.

I wouldn't mind seeing this happen for purely selfish reasons since Columbia is less than a 12hr drive for me

I think you're right they would leave in a heartbeat. Missouri would be a better fit in the Big 10 and I'm sure that is their preference. Arkansas, Kentucky and even Tennessee would make good rivals. It's a pipe dream but it'd be great to see the schools Texas has under their heels get the ultimate revenge.

Out of curiosity I looked up Missouri's record against the SEC, and Big Ten.

They have played several Big Ten teams more often than SEC teams. They've played Ole Miss about 5 times, and that was the most of any SEC team. Surprisingly, they own winning records against most SEC opponents, including Florida and Alabama.

They've played Illinois 21 times, Ohio State 13 times, Penn State about 6 times, Michigan about 6 or 7 times, Minnesota several times and also Iowa, Purdue, and Wisconsin several times. They really belong in the Big Ten and it's obvious to me now why they were considering offering them.

That's a nice bit of research. Do you have an idea why the Big 10 cooled on them? I had assumed it was a done deal.

I can only imagine it had something to do with money (doesn't everything these days?)

I kind of wonder if they regarded Nebraska #1 on their list. They got Nebraska, and then the climate just got bad with all the Texas stuff, and they decided not to go further because of, again, being labeled the entity that broke college football up.

Missouri would have been a solid addition, one of the better expansion options for the SEC. Not the home run A&M would have been, but Missouri would have almost certainly given the SEC a second shot at A&M as well. It's clear the SEC wasn't completely committed to moving into Texas or else they would have sent offers to both A&M and if necessary Missouri, instead of flirting with OU. On their own right, Missouri is the second largest Big 12 state and would give Arkansas a nice natural rival and probably make them feel more at home. Missouri would have been quite happy to have a home and would sign almost anything (as they are even accepting second class citizen status in the Big 12).

There's only one team worthy of an invite to the SEC, and that's Notre Dame.

Missouri?

They bring us....what exactly?

A little stouter basketball. Let's face it. Other than Kentucky & Florida. What does the SEC have in the bball world to increase revenue? IMO, Mizzou would bring in a little more bball cash.

Heh, don't get me wrong I'd love Notre Dame in the SEC. It would be fun to beat up on them until they got tired of it and left. I always said they're the grand slam of additions.

However, this arrogance really bothers me. Only one team worthy of the SEC? Really? Texas A&M in a football crazy state with a population of over 24 million and is top 20 in almost every measurable isn't worthy of a 14 team SEC? Yeah, the SEC is too good for everyone. In another thread someone pointed out that most of the top rated 2008 games were Big 12 games, but don't let the facts bother you. The SEC has the top 12 schools in the country, everything else is misinformation.

Missouri would bring the St. Louis market specifically, the second largest Big 12 state and there's a reason the Big 10 (who is actually more powerful than the SEC) looked at them. Missouri would also secure Arkansas' ties to the SEC and even if just a fake, the SEC could have used Missouri to finish off the Big 12 and land A&M (they still could have left Missouri at the altar if they wanted). I actually did a post showing that it was entirely feasible that the SEC add Missouri and A&M and increase their revenue by a significant portion and clearly neither of those teams would come into the SEC and unseat elites. That's the misconception some people have, that only football elites are desirable. I actually argue the contrary, good strong programs that do well even when losing are the most desirable for a strong conference like the SEC.

Texas A&M is in a football crazy state? Per the aTm AD, they've never sold out their season tickets...never. The state may be football crazy but maybe not for Aggie football.

Nevertheless, I still think they (and Missouri) would be good strategic additions to the SEC.

I suppose we all bring biases to the table as to which schools we'd like to see added... IF indeed the PTB determine we should add teams. From my perspective... please NOT Missouri. To me, they just don't "feel" like an SEC team. If we ever go to 14, I'm for aTm to the west and VaTech to the east. Both "feel" right to me.

St. Louis, Kansas City, more potential television sets than any existing SEC state except Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee, and entry to a previously untouched region that also borders Tennessee and Arkansas.

A better than average basketball program and recently not-terrible football.
