Socialism is pretty much a pejorative that's been used for 70+ years to discredit progressive policies. The according to Hoyle definition is "a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole". I don't think I've heard Bernie or any of his ilk talk about the government taking over Exxon, et. al.

Well, one could argue that Medicare is socialistic, given that the means of distribution and/or exchange is owned by the whole. Of course, it is the more cost efficient means of distribution compared to private insurance.

Trump's hardcore base truly believes that socialism = communism. He knows their ignorance and feeds their hatred of communism associating it with the Democrats. I learned a lesson many years ago in my first real job that "you cannot deal with crazy people" and trump and his followers are truly crazy.

rw talk radio has been conflating the two forever. add in newt and fox news and you start to realize how we got here.
