I noticed that we seemed to have different packages against Hawaii.
1. KD and McClain
2. Johns and Castille
3. Castille and McClain

Any advantages to these combos? The most obvious is #3 with the big boys back there to get short yardage. I liked everything about the schemes with the exception of the lack of yardage gained from Hawaii stacking 8 in the box.
I am anxious to see Johns touch the ball more. He is exciting.

I think, while JJ is exciting and shows great promise, he was able to run more against Hawaii because they weren't keying on him the same way they keyed on Darby.

Nearly every article I read before the Hawaii game said that our key to winning would be getting the ball to KD over and over. They must have thought the same as well, and dared us to throw, which we did.

I would actually like to see the RB worked into the passing game - more screens and quick outs to the RBs.

But as long as we keep putting up W's, I dont really care.

In short yardage situations, I would love to see a truely Jumbo pacakage of Castille, McClain, and JJ. Obviously the entire D package would fill the box creating other opportunities for the TE's across the middle. As long as we can find a way to win, I don't care how we do it. :BigA:

JJ did not look like the same running back from last year. He looked like a real hard man to tackle against Hawaii.

I don't like how often our coaches use the "jumbo" package. It's far too predictable IMO, and we're not at the point in our program where we can line up and basically tell the other team what's coming and dare them to stop us. Instead of using the "jumbo" package on short yardage situations outside of the red zone, put JJ back there and let him bang away at the line. At least it would be a different look from what defenses are used to. But that's why I'm writing my ideas on this forum and not making the calls for real! :p RTR!!!

I agree. I posted something similar earlier this week. I think we rely too much on the Jumbo Package in the Red Zone and we are too predictable. I'm not that sold on its effectiveness under the best conditions. Last week Castille basically got the TD because the Hawaii LB fell down and he took it outside. Otherwise it would have been stuffed three? times in a row and we would have been kicking a FG and possibly losing.
