Top three Bama RB's..

Can't do it, it's just too dang subjective and we've had too many great back with varying types of skills.

But just to throw a little controversy into the game, how about Gene Jelks? Like him or not, he was quick as a hiccup and a real home run threat on every carry. I'm not suggesting that he belongs on a short list because he didn't get that many carries and got switched to defense after his knee injury, but there's no doubting his skills, he probably at least should to be mentioned if you want to be objective.
 
I'm one of those who are a bit two young to have seen more than a couple classic games of guys like Musso and Humphrey, but from the guys I have seen:

1. Mark Ingram
2. Shaun Alexander
3. Kenneth Darby

Honorable Mention to Shaud Williams and Dennis Riddle, I always really liked both of those guys play ball. Also I am very hopeful that TR will put himself on this list.
 
Tough question...I just can't answer it as asked. Here's my top ten. (in no particular order)

Bobby Humphery
Johnny Musso
Touchdown Tony Nathan
Mark Ingram
Shaun Alexander
Major Ogilvie
Sherman Williams
Siran Stacy
Wilbur Jackson
Shaud Williams

Run to glory! 74 yd TD run against the barn in 1985. 192 yards rushing that night.

Three is tough. Even though he's just a sophomore, you can't discount what Ingram has done -- winning the Heisman alone. Not to mention he's already cracked our all-time Top Ten. Our career rushing leader would still be Bobby Humphrey had he not missed basically a year due to injury.

You can't have the discussion without Shaun or Musso. Tony Nathan and Major Ogilvie played in an era where they didn't necessarily get the carries that some of the guys have gotten over the years.

The older generation would have Bobby Marlow in the mix.

Ken Darby sits 3rd on the all-time list. Dennis Riddle is also there (Top 10). And one of our more under-rated backs in my opinion was Johnny Davis. Anyone that saw him in the wishbone knows that he was an absolute machine. He's also in the Top 10.

I remember J Davis as never having a negative yard rush. Is this correct and if so, is he the only back to have accomplished this? On second thought, it may be Ricky Moore that holds that record.

He was stopped once for a loss his senior year.

RBs from earlier eras are hampered by less games played and the fact that defense prevailed. Defenses stacked the line and it was harder to run against them on a whole.

Harry Gilmer ran almost as much as he passed, but he was almost untacklable in the open field. Bobby Marlow averaged 6.3 yards per carry.

My top three:
1. Mark Ingram
2. Bobby Humphrey
3. Bobby Marlow
 
My list is limited by my age, the first running back I recall at Alabama was Siran Stacy.

1: Mark Ingram
Early in the season I wasn't even sure he was the best Alabama running back. His development was amazing and while I'm still not sure he's the best physical specimen the team has at the position, the balance and evasiveness he has shown to go along with his physical characteristics are unlike anyone I've seen at Alabama.

2: Shaun Alexander
If he didn't spend some time in the doghouse he might be at the top of the list. As it was, his NFL success came as no surprise.

3: Sherman Williams
I think he's underrated. He was a complete back, able to catch, run and even do returns. He did pretty much everything you could hope your RB to do.

Honorable mention:
Trent Richardson
He is the most impressive specimen I recall seeing Alabama ever have at the position. If his development is anything like what we have seen from Ingram he's going to end up on the list.

Davis / Musso

Bama vs TN. I'm on work-related travel with two TN grads. We're watching the game together... I don't recall what city we were in. I'll never forget the total anguish of the TN grads as Bama kept running Student Body Left, Student Body Right with Humphrey knocking down first downs almost every run. A wonderful sight to behold. My spirits soared even as the TN grads were reduced to fits of anger and disgust. I avoided gloating. :smile:

So when I think of great RBs at Alabama, Humphrey is at the top of my list.
