Nope - every player has a max genetic capability unique to them. Having a greater degree of higher rated players means you've just got way more potential - period. Coaching can get the max from a player, but their max is still their max, and some players floors are simply higher than others ceiling. it's better to play the odds and make sure the floor is higher...
I coached for 19 years. I cannot tell you the number of TALENTED players who ... couldn't figure out how to WIN ... didn't know how (or wouldn't) be part of a TEAM ... were battling "the tapes in their heads" from hyper-critical or "helicopter" parents (or a previous teacher or coach) ... or who didn't like their present coach (Me!). Then there were the very talented players who were actually *afraid* to win....!

All that baggage impacted their performance.

Sometimes these players came closer to their potential because of good coaching. But team camaraderie and cohesiveness was often the "magic pill" which made the difference.

My first year as HC, I inherited a team which nearly idolized the previous HC. That HC warned me about ... Bill. "If I were you I wouldn't even let him tryout; he's a major negative influence."

I let Bill tryout. He was a natural leader, encourager and had a measure of talent. As a player Bill was never going to be a STAR. But Bill naturally unified the team. I made him Team Captain.

It was one of the best coaching decisions I ever made.

It isn’t really 25 days though because of school drop/add deadlines. You can go into portal but there isn’t anywhere for you to go. You can’t be registered at Alabama then do spring activities somewhere else. Once they past the drop/add period most everyone has to wait til Spring anyway til they can actually join with other schools programs. Now that doesn’t mean people won’t leave after spring practices when they see where they think they are but will open up portal for everyone in the country.

While I had heard this from various places, it appears that many/most/all schools have an exception for transferring athletes.

Sounds like Michigan and Lsu will be dealing with these shenanigans if Harbaugh goes to NFL and Kelly goes to Michigan. This is definitely a hot mess and the Coaching dominoes falling will make this even crazier. RTR

Good news on the transfer front. Washington edge Noah Carter is in the portal and trending big to Bama. He was a 4* top 100 player and highest rated Washington signee in 2023.

Also heard Washington starting center will be in town this weekend and this is an area of need with McLaughlin gone.

Be nice to get both of them

The reality is places like Washington will get hit the hardest because they will lose their coach and a lot of their players will use the get out of jail free card to fly the coop.

The only reason this isn't worse is because Saban retired, he didn't replace anyone at another university. The Harbaugh/Kelly deal would send shockwaves through the entire P5, especially at LSU, where their recruiting for 2025 has looked pretty good so far.

Re the issue of Saban being in the building and trying to convince players to stay, I'm not really sure how well that will work considering that the primary reason most of them probably committed to Alabama was because he was the coach.

I can see some of them (rightly or wrongly) being like, "Why should I stick around here for 3-4 years if you aren't sticking around here that long after you asked me to come play for you?"

I'm not blaming Saban for anything...the man has done more for the team (and arguably the university) than any other individual.

But I can certainly understand if some 18-20 year old isn't swayed by him under the circumstances.

Agreed. This stuff is complicated so I'm taking my cues from The Goat. Nick Saban appears to love Caleb Downs and his family. I obviously won't pull for him next September. But to call down Old Testament ruin on Downs and all the other Portalites seems a bit much. Caleb Downs played his guts out for Alabama last season. He and the others will be playing for a new team now. We'll be cheering for the players who stayed.

RTR.
I certainly agree that an old testament plague of locusts or frogs would just be excessive to wish on anybody, but a bad case of jock itch or a big zit on their forehead seems like an appropriate and measured response.

I'm just sayin' .... Don't be messing with kitty-kitty.

If we know anything about Nick it is that he cares about his players. He is telling them to do what they think is best for them but he is also emphasizing that we have a new coach that can get them to the League as well as anyone. I think the majority of these kids stay put but they have everyone and their mamas telling them what to do. Nick can counsel them but it is up to Coach DeBoer and his staff to make their mark on this team and convince them of this new vision they have.
