colleges use to take their time and hire a guy, with the transfer portal and the 30 day rule, programs now have to hire a guy in a matter of hours.how do they know they have the right guy? A hotshot NFL guy is now out of the question because their season doesn’t end until February for a few, late January for most NfL coaches. I propose a rule change , This is absurd. Coaches making hasty decisions, AD’s making hasty decisions.

I’ve never heard whether Downs had a deal to get paid while he was at Bama. I imagine he was but I don’t know for sure.
I just wondered how much he was clearing while at Bama and if that wasn’t enough, what did his new team‘s boosters have to pay?
There was a report of a multi million dollar value. I imagine with 3 years of eligibility and his performance on the field last year, he got every bit of it.

I know we are all concerned about number of players in the portal and at last count I believe it is 28. However, other SEC schools have had many and did not have the coach leaving window open up. See a few examples below and it is a sign of the times.

Florida 22
UGA 20
LSU 17

i agree

A few things will change about hiring and firing coaches.

1) Middle of the pack schools will hold on to mediocre coaches more than ever before.

2) Coaches will be fired more in season/or only when portal is open.

3) You will have a lot of back door deals (tampering) for coaches in place before you ever fire a coach.

4) Schools will put in clauses in coach’s contracts about leaving outside of the portal window for larger buyouts in non-portal times.

5) There will be a lot of promoting of coaches inside of the program especially in the coordinator positions. Especially for your best recruiters/coaches who have best relationships with players.

Just my two cents.

Just make it an NFL minor league and let them regulate it like they would another other franchise.

And might as well just cast aside the student part and let the players simply be employees of the team.

An 18 year old pulling down a million dollars to play his freshman year at Bama but he’s afraid he won’t get the attention he needs from his new coach so he jumps ship.

FWIW, I don't know what motivated CD to transfer, but it wasn't a fear of PT or impressing CKD.

Dude was a day one starter for CNS. He would be next fall at Bama too (and anywhere he goes).

I think NIL contracts are coming and I have a feeling these donors are going to put in 3 year clauses that if they don’t stick around then they forfeit parts of it or have to pay buyouts to leave. It will be like coaches with buyout clauses and it’s sad but I think it’s going that direction.

That was his transfer portal value. Objectively I understand. OSU was his second choice, those coaches are still there, he doesn’t know what to expect from the new staff. Throw in a couple of mil, At 19, today, I would probably say thanks for the memories Bama . Except I wouldn’t because I grew up in the era of team , loyalty, and love for the university.

It could be possible getting out of the SEC especially not going to UGA was to keep from the side/clown show of playing Bama, him and his family probably getting harassed via text and online. It was a smart move on their part where he csn concentrate on football and not the other "stuff" that would have definitely came with goingb to UGA
The Downs family did not like how UGA handled the Josh Downs recruitment (IDK what happened). OSU came in second to Alabama in Caleb's initial recruitment. So, going to OSU for a lot of money makes sense. Btw, I don't begrudge the family going for money - it's their prerogative within a system that has emerged under the auspices of adults - though it does affect how you view someone.

Btw, IMO UGA is the big loser in this scenario and Alabama came in second. UGA is stuck with a mediocre DC for nothing. Probably creates a somewhat awkward, if not unpleasant, feel in the defensive coaching room.

OTOH, Alabama was wise or fortunate to avoid TR as DC, which in the end would not have mattered because it's clear now that the Downs' family was going for the money all along and the "relationships" argument has been shown to be empty. Even if Downs would have stayed it was not worth it to retain what is IMO a mediocre DC. Don't know if Alabama fell into this gain or maneuvered, but to any objective observer they came out as good as possible in losing a great player.

OSU got a great player. Not sure at what non-monetary cost, if any. Certainly prefer this to UGA.
