The Proctor case may get interesting. Many times, schools have had impermissible contact with recruits, then quit recruiting them and self-reported. Sometimes, the contact is unplanned and accidental which I think is looked at in a different light than contact that is deliberate. Maybe contact from Iowa coaches was in good faith in being supportive of Proctor without the thought or intention of recruiting him back from Alabama.

I don't know how this one will shake out. If the NCAA actually does something, it will take a while before they get through the process. I'd think some loss of scholarships may be in order.

I doubt much will come out of the Proctor/Iowa affair, especially with UTK basically burning the ships in their response to the NCAA. As much as I hate UTK, I'm glad a major school is throwing grenades back at them. Hopefully, the days of the NCAA are numbered and a new governing body can arise to oversee the power 4 and the CFP.

The NCAA reported $1.28B in revenue for the 2022-23 fiscal year. Over half of which was distributed back to member schools. $669M was distributed back to the 363 Division 1 schools. They won't go away without a fight. I can see the Power 4 conferences splitting away in football, but everything else needs the NCAA, in my opinion.

Let's see, we got three years probation for immediately taking action and firing a baseball coach for betting on a game, something that was almost impossible for us to foresee. I predict Iowa will get a 1 week probation, and a pat on the back from the NCAA for being so forthcoming with this issue.
Let’s not underplay the seriousness of what he/we did though, by comparing the two

Iowa is only doing exactly what the NCAA indirectly told them to do. I’d prefer if they got nothing. Because what they did get is worse.

…a message to every other team that $5k is all it costs to tamper with a kid.

Idk. Everything gets leaked. As soon as you start talking to people outside of your organization it is too easy for info to leak.
The thing is that there was far more credible smoke on Saban’s retirement from August to January than many would like to admit. It wasn’t like previous years in which it was swiftly dismissed or done away with. I think there was probably more people who knew where Saban was leaning from Kentucky on. More or less Alabama was prepared for it.

Whether Saban really decided on the ultimate decision within 5 minutes… who knows. But it makes for a good cover for Byrne should he strike out on the KD hire.

Retirement rumors get more credible every year and people will always say they saw something coming when they had no real knowledge.

Yeah but these were a little bit more. You had coaches acting like it was their last time playing him, you had articles being published that would never been the last several years, and alot of people putting their names to rumors that really don’t unless there are some legs behind them. This wasn’t a bunch of “I’ll be right someday if I constantly post it” rumors that you get from the Dodds of the world.

Admission and self reporting should be taken into consideration, but it should not absolve a penalty being handed down. Personally, they reached out to him, and the penalty should be to them, not Proctor on an individual level. But, the penalty should have teeth in the form of an immediate bowl ban for 2024 and a significant monetary penalty owed to the University of Alabama.
I mean, they only reported it after Proctor talked about it openly to the media.

Also, forcing Proctor to sit out is also a punishment against Iowa to pursuing him. And lastly, Proctor is not a child with no agency. Maybe having to sit out a year (as all transfers had to do only a few years ago) will teach him what tampering is. It is also a message to all other players in the sport- you are also responsible for you actions- if you entertain tampering, you can also be held responsible.

I think there was drama we knew about and drama we didn't know about that probably influenced him.

I had heard something but was told to keep it private, but then someone posted it here. Allegedly when Saban was meeting with players about their future (the week after the Rose Bowl) many of them were more concerned about themselves/NIL than anything else.

I wonder if this could have been the tipping point that day he had to make a decision?

He may never say it, but the portal and NIL were the deciding factor in my opinion. I don’t blame him. If I was a top shelf college coach I would be looking to go to the NFL or maybe the house until they get this under control. It’s a total zoo.

I'm good with that to, just as long as Iowa cuts the $1MM check to Bama as part of the penalty.

Most definitely. You could tell how sick of NIL he was in 2022 when he said how Texas A&M bought the #1 recruiting class. He also revealed the story of how a player wanted $500K and also have Alabama get his girlfriend into law school. Tommy Tuberville has remained friends with Saban over the years so they talk from time to time and Tuberville says NIL was a big factor.
