In reality we were no closer to a title this year than 2007.

I prefer 12-2 to 7-6 any time so don’t get me wrong. But Alabama was not beating any team in that playoff field this season, and would have lost to Georgia 9 times out of 10. I’m thankful we got them on the one day we had a chance.
Lawson gets another tenth of an inch on that tip ball Moore intercepts it and we beat Michigan. I swear some people act like we lost by 40. Michigan won the championship but they got lot of breaks to go their way in both games. Penix missed wide open receivers for touchdowns in that game too. There used to be 2 or 3 teams that could win championships but now 7-8 because of portal and nil.

And go watch the video of his HS coach breaking down the plays than ran, what the QB was watching for and the progressions he should go thru and it's very likely he's more advanced than last year's starter in not just the CKD/Grubb scheme but reading defenses in general.

Based on today's events and his time in the system already it wouldn't shock me if he's not challenging for the #1 to #2 spot in the spring and fall.
I'd go a step further and say that Mack is QB1 until these other guys get a grasp of the offense. Spring is going to be critical in teaching this system and having a QB already on the same page teaching the WR's and RBs will be key to installing this new offense.

I wonder if having to constantly replace coaches who left played a part into Coach Saban leaving. It was almost an annual thing; a school needs a head coach. First thought seemed to be who are the coordinators at Alabama? Teams need a coordinator, who does Alabama have as position coaches who could fill the position. Maybe the constant coaching changes over time caused a decline in the quality of coaching players were getting. It wasn't a talent issue as the recruiting never dropped off.
I certainly wouldn`t think that it helped. Guy is human, had to have some kind of wearing effect.

Do we want to go back through the regular season games and talk about the inch or two type plays that if we don't make or the other team makes that we lose 4 or 5 games?

What I have learned throughout the Nick Saban era is that teams that "get a lot of breaks" are usually just the better team making their own breaks. We used to do that. Other teams used to say that about us.

They do not anymore. They have not in a while.

This sucks and I'm not sure what else I'm supposed to think about it.

I know people don't want me talking about it, but DeBoer didn't even recruit Sayin (edit: the information I saw was incorrect, he did offer Sayin) even though he was in his own backyard.

This is a mess, and I'm going to go ahead and say it. I'm not really sure if DeBoer is smoke and mirrors or not.

He got Penix because Penix was at Indiana as the same time as him. Penix's coming out party, his 2020 game against Ohio State was after DeBoer was gone. DeBoer's success at Washington came with Penix playing amazing Heisman caliber football against west coast defenses. The question is which of the two deserves credit?

We will find out if DeBoer is legit in a hurry. He can't recruit, he just can't, he can't keep Alabama's talent, he has no connections to blue chip guys, he couldn't even try to recruit Sayin out of high school for some reason.

I've been told he can win with 3 stars. Well soon we'll find out, but I'm honestly irritated that DeBoer had every chance to develop a relationship with Sayin (who is from the west coast) and for some reason blue chips just never have been his thing. Washington State offers Sayin but DeBoer doesn't bother?

It is what it is, but what it is right now doesn't look good and I've tried to see the bright side but what I'm seeing now is the result of a guy that hasn't developed good relationships with blue chips.
You really couldn’t be more wrong about DeBoer

Yea, that was probably one of the things. We had consistency in recruiting and direction but having to constantly replace coaches really hampered continuity. I guess that is the price of success. Time to turn the page now though.

Am I surprised Sayin has portaled, NO. First and most importantly, as B1G said in an earlier post, Sayin committed to be Saban's QB, not Alabama's QB. There is a belief that if Alabama offers you a football scholarship you are in rarified air and you would be a fool not take the scholarship. That may have been the case during Saban's tenure, but the game, the rules, and the players have changed. I would not say 100% of our players are at Alabama, because it is Alabama, but the overwhelming majority are at Alabama because of Coach Saban. I think this attrition should have been expected, so while I have not been surprised, I do realize things are going to be rocky for the foreseeable future.

Seriously now that the Downs and Saying downfall has occurred, the only player on the team that could come close to equaling these is some bad Justice or Jam news.
Don't even say that. Justice would be as bad as Downs. I know many think Miller is the same, but IMO, Justice is in a different stratosphere. I think he is a great back, Miller is good.

If CNS/Rees had just played Justice and ran him more, Alabama would have won the NC. And Saban knew this, therefore he entered a playoff game earlier than any other game this year because CNS knew that he needed him. But as soon as it appeared that Alabama got the game under control, CNS went back to his more seasoned players. IMO, cost them the game. Then they would have beaten UW by controlling the ball with Justice, a little Jase and a few Milroe keepers and maybe a bomb or two. Would have won by 2 or 3 TDs.

The Marlon Humphrey comment was the one that bothered me the most.

You aren't wrong, most of us here are feeling the same things you are.
I didn't think much of it. Marlon was just being honest about what he would have done as a teenager with all the money being thrown around. It would have been too much to turn down. Whether or not he would have actually left is debatable. But no doubt the NFL guys are loving this money being thrown around and wishing they could have had it so good.

We were one injury away from a championship in 2021 and almost played in the Championship Game this year. In both years, we were in that position because we had Nick Saban on the sideline. Washington was in the Championship Game this year because they had CKD on the sideline.
That's pretty much the same thing I said. So are you agreeing or disagreeing?

Maybe, and perhaps Sark has great success at Texas over the next 5 years. I just know that 2023 was the first year Sark won double digit games as a HC. So I just don't view him in the same vein that a lot do.
He’s no Saban for sure, nobody is, but he would have inherited a much better gig here than at Texas. Time will definitely tell if he’s got it or not

We'll sort of have an idea of how this is going to shake out by the end of next November, but don't be surprised if the team we end up fielding, who ever that is, is inconsistent throughout the first year. Don't' forget CNS's first year at Bama.

Now back at it...........

Love Lyle Lovett; if you have not seen him with The Large Band; GO. Cool guy and Great musicians
One of the orchestras I play in in Santa Fe played with him and his smaller band back in September. Incredibly nice guys and legendary musicians - Lee Sklar, Russ Kunkel, Stuart Duncan.

Given the apocalyptic vibe Bamaland just now, I think this temporary NS diversion is wholly appropriate for this thread.

We now return you to your previously scheduled hand-wringing.

When CKD was hired and flew to Tuscaloosa, on the plane with him was Courtney Morgan. He was a big part of building the roster at Michigan before moving to Washington and rebuilding their roster in a short amount of time. Apparently CKD thinks VERY highly of him to bring him on the plane with him when he came to Tuscaloosa. What I suspect is that our recruiting approach is going to change with Morgan being the GM. I'm not sure that we're necessarily going to just try to sign the best player at every position in the country but the emphasis will be on signing the best player at every position that fits the system that CKD is going to run. There is a difference there because sometimes the best player at a certain position is not the best fit for the system that CKD is going to run. Our overall recruiting ranking may drop but we could be better off in the long term. Time will tell and I'm willing to give CKD the benefit of the doubt on this one.
