I'm trying to think that way for the coaches bringing guys in, but this one is a head scratcher to me. Despite what the article says about this guy playing the nickel/husky role, he was listed as an LB (the Husky's are listed as Safeties) on the USA roster, his bio talks about playing LB, and a depth chart had him as a MikeLB. I have a hard time thinking this guy is really going to compete with Lawson and/or Campbell for an ILB type role. On3 and Rivals don't even have profiles on him, and 247 barely has any info - he was outside of the top 100 position rankings and his only other offer listed was Gardner-Webb...
Rashad Johnson had one offer. It was West Alabama. Y’all remember the rest.

I’m certainly no Lane Kiffin fan, but he’s probably close to accurate on how much O$U has spent on its players—no offense intended to B1G Tide, a very classy and knowledgeable poster here. I read somewhere else that the figure might be closer to $15M, what with the Down$ and $ayin transfers in the past few days. Personally, I don’t get either one of those guys going there, but it’s their choice, and it won’t bother me a bit, as I will pull for the Bama players who have shown that they want to be here. I think the transfer for $ayin was a little more risky, considering there is a full qb room at O$U and even worse, BOB is the OC there and not exactly a “qb whisperer.” $ayin might blossom, but he will more likely not be coached well and could fizzle out or transfer again, perhaps to USC. At the very least, he is probably no higher than 4th on the depth chart after spring, and probably 5th and take a redshirt. Regardless, I am ready to see what our team, especially the qbs, look like in spring ball and Roll Tide!

6’1” might be his “helmet and cleats” height… not to say he’s not capable of a late spurt in college. Deboer’s offense requires a QB that can see the field and route tree really well and really accurately. There was more room for moving and freestyling (by default) under O’Brien and Rees for undersized guys who can move, but this will be at least a couple steps up from that. There’s a chance after seeing his stature up close, they remembered they had a more developed 6’6” guy in Seattle.
The next time I see one of these “late growth spurts” in college will be the first time.

It's remarkable how different - and how fast - college football has changed and become. Just think about the Sayin example.. Alabama spends 2+ years of time, resources, and effort to recruit him. He commits in December, attends bowl practice, and by the end of January is at Ohio State. I don't think this model is sustainable, but I do believe that it seriously harms the way many view the game.

If he is visiting UA then it is because Wommack prompted him to. Maybe it is only a kind gesture or maybe coach thinks the guy can play...maybe at another position at UA, like Safety.
He has an offer from Arkansas too in the portal, so we're not the only team who thinks he can play in the SEC.
There are a surprising number of NFL players that come from back grounds and schools just like you describe. Maybe he is one of those dudes.
I get what you're saying, but there's a lot of NFL players who weren't rated high coming out of HS. Played at smaller schools and blossomed into studs. Maybe he will be one of them?
I get all that, but if he was some under the radar super stud, like Josh Jacobs, you'd think he'd have pushed for major reps on defense at USA, instead he was a special teams guy in year one and a role/sub player in year 2, although he did get a couple of starts.

Any yes, there are guys in the NFL who come from schools like this, but let's put it in context. The ENTIRE sunbelt conference - all 14 schools combined - had 48 guys on active rosters in the NFL in '23. 'Bama alone has FIFTY SEVEN guys on active NFL rosters.

All we can do is speculate. Wommack offered the kid for a reason and I assume it is a committable offer and that he will accept. He knows something we don't and it could be because he thinks the kid has been playing out of position and has somewhere else in mind. We have read recently that he has done that before.

I think what you're trying to say without actually saying it.....this guy is a major talent downgrade.

We certainly don't need to be taking guys from South Alabama. There's a reason they went to South. We've got to restock the defense, it doesn't need to be with Sun Belt backups. That will get us manhandled.

Maybe - but the kid self reported a 4.81 40 out of HS, and while he's hopefully gotten a bit faster, that get him to kinda respectable LB speed, and certainly isn't nickel or Safety speed.

Yeah, we lost Blackshire, Jackson and Murphy, and with them I get it. Blackshire going into his senior season and likely in a backup role. Jackson stepped down to UTSA - right level for his talent. Murphy just never seemed to advance for whatever reason. This just doesn't seem like the way to replace that unless he's depth until the true freshmen we brought in figure it out...

Jaylen Key came from UAB last year and nothing really stuck out about him either while he was there. Trey Amos came from Louisiana a sun belt team as well. So 2 of our secondary guys that saw decent amount of action last year were transfers from small schools. So this wouldn’t be anything we haven’t done before but since it not a Saban move will get put more under microscope by some.

Lol I was actually reading that he supposedly loves BoB, and that was the main reason he signed with Ohio State, since he was originally signed to play for Saban and BoB. Seems weird to me, but i suppose I could see the pitch. "I coached Tom Brady and Bryce Young".
It's easy to look like a genius when you "coached" Tom Brady.

We apparently sent an offer to Khalil Jacobs who was in the portal with South Alabama. He wasn’t a big recruit but must be someone the new DC likes with his time there coaching him.
"Amassed 64 tackles, three sacks, three forced fumbles, and one interception." Evidently, a ball hawk.
