With all due respect, there will be many players…with many reasons.Any players hitting the Portal in the spring weren't good enough to crack their team's playing rotation.

I don't think that's 100% the case anymore. It's true in large part, but with it being as easy to transfer as it is these days, I can see some really good players after going through spring practice, look around them and decide they aren't going to win anything if they stay at their current school. Either in terms of coaching/philosophy not fitting their skills or players around them not being very good.Any players hitting the Portal in the spring weren't good enough to crack their team's playing rotation.

We've had some really good transfers. Most transferred before spring, but JaMo and Trey Amos are 2 who came after spring.Perhaps.
But remember that JaMo was buried on the depth chart at OSU and once he got to Bama he was a beast.
I don't recall when he transferred, but clearly OSU didn't know what they had in him.
Sometimes one staff can completely undervalue/underestimate players they have on campus.
Alabama just lost multiple starters to the portal, including a couple of likely future 1st round NFL draft picks.
We actually got Key and Amos from the spring portal last year. You can find starters. Guys leave for multiple reasons.Any players hitting the Portal in the spring weren't good enough to crack their team's playing rotation.

Neither were starters for us, maybe key cogs in the system, but not startersWe actually got Key and Amos from the spring portal last year. You can find starters. Guys leave for multiple reasons.
Yes. Technically, you are correct. Amos playing behind 2 1st round cornerbacks. Would have been the starter and played significant minutes in the playoff. Key played a ton at safety. I think you get my point. You can find starters in the spring portal.Neither were starters for us, maybe key cogs in the system, but not starters
Right, but what NoNC4 is talking about is the portal that opens after spring practice. The kids entering the portal then are doing it because they don't think they'll be starting in the fall.
We lost guys because of a coaching change....that causes the portal to open for 30 days.

I thought Coach Herman Boone said that in Remember the Titans. As John Merritt coach at Tennessee State said many years ago: his players must be Mobile, Agile, and Hostile.
All quite on the meat chicken front. Guess they got what they wanted from their new hire.
Sorry Doc. All I am saying is that if we need cornerbacks then there are a couple of 4*s in the portal now.Yep. But, first, there wasn't a guy on Saban's staff that it would have similarly made sense to hand over the keys to the program to. And, second, Saban announced his retirement at the worst possible time for player retention, with time to transfer to a new school and compete in spring practice, whereas it's really too late to do that two-plus weeks later.
I have seen you say Saban announced his retirement at the worst time for player retention several times. When exactly would have been a good time? I can't think of a better time than when it happened.Yep. But, first, there wasn't a guy on Saban's staff that it would have similarly made sense to hand over the keys to the program to. And…if the person who beats you out is Caleb Downs-type, doesn’t mean you’re not good…With all due respect, there will be many players…with many reasons.
