Trump Attacks Iran, IV

“For over a thousand years, the Catholic Church has taught just war theory and it is that long tradition the Holy Father carefully references in his comments on war. A constant tenet of that thousand-year tradition is a nation can only legitimately take up the sword ‘in self-defense, once all peace efforts have failed’ (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2308). That is, to be a just war it must be a defense against another who actively wages war, which is what the Holy Father actually said: ‘He does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war.’

“When Pope Leo XIV speaks as supreme pastor of the universal Church, he is not merely offering opinions on theology, he is preaching the Gospel and exercising his ministry as the Vicar of Christ. The consistent teaching of the Church is insistent that all people of good will must pray and work toward lasting peace while avoiding the evils and injustices that accompany all wars.”

You can make an argument that Iran has been waging war since 1979. They have a pretty long list of terrorist attacks and proxy's attacking countries all over the region and the world.

Biblically God wasn't listening to the Israelites then when they attacked Jericho because they certainly weren't provoked.

The other side of the coin for me is the pope is just a man. He is as much the Vicar of Christ as I am. I give his words no more weight than a country preacher in rural Alabama.

All of that being said I think the Iran attack was a mistake just because you can't finish them off without sending in the Army and Marines and no one wants to do that including me. You can't finish off an enemy with bombing unless you are willing to destroy the entire country and have mass casualties of civilians. Think what we were doing to Japan before the nukes. Go look up the fire bombing of Japan. The Japanese people would have starved to death in 1946. The US Army Air Force was planning to bomb all infrastructure and even agriculture.

I'm speaking as a protestant, of course, so I obviously have many disagreements with the pope. In fact, I have quite of number of lifelong Catholic friends who have disagreements of opinion with the pope. However, for a newly-minted Catholic to criticize his pope on the grounds that the pope should be more careful in speaking about theology? That's not only unseemly arrogance, it calls into question his basic understanding of Catholicism...

smug arrogance and ignorance is a bad combination

I'll be very honest in that I couldn't care less what any pope thinks, but I did take a hard look at what he said about prayer and warfare. The dude did a great job using verses completely out of context. It gave me so much confidence in his role as vicar of Christ.

As I feared air power alone can't topple a regime like Iran. The leaders and IRGC are absolute maniacs. The only way to remove them is to kill them all and you can't do that with air power alone, and no one has the stomach to conquer Iran. It would be like Iraq or Vietnam.

Proof positive that Pete Kegsbreath is nothing more than a clown. A rump clown at that.

I mean, do people who support this clown show still justify this idiocy?
