Did the officers let him go because he was dressed like them?
From what I remember from the presser....the officer pulled up next to his vehicle, rolled her window down, and tried to speak to him. He just stared straight ahead - not responding to her. So she left to go check out the residence.

I thought it was odd that her "spidey-senses" didn't kick in when the guy was ignoring her.

Then again - in law enforcement there are some personality types who could be characterized as egotistical to the point where behaviour like that might be deemed not so abnormal.

On top of that when you have multiple agencies involved there probably is a bit of resentment.

I don't know - just shooting out thoughts. Maybe we'll know more about that going forward.

BTW, I was watching the presser on CNN and afterwards Dana Bash herself brought this exact same point up right at the top of her segment, so it wasn't just something that stood out to me.

Agree. And rightly so. At that point I don't think anyone knew this guy was impersonating a cop - least of all driving a cop vehicle.
When I heard about the encounter, the first thing I thought was whether or not he was wearing that ridiculous inhuman-looking latex mask...

Apparently, as soon as he took the flashlight out of their eyes, the Hoffmans knew it was a mask...
I heard that, too. Guess there was security cameras that caught everything. Plus assuming the victims were able to give some account. Which would be remarkable given how many times they were shot!

It sure is tough, though, knowing a LEO actually saw him and could have intervened. Two more lives lost...

Like I said earlier....it wouldn't have bugged me as much if it weren't the way the presser was managed.

Like some kind of pep rally or something.

I mean, we see it all the time......but in this case IMHO they kinda blew it.

I remember hearing them say it and how it really stood out from everything else.

Im all for supporting LEOs but my experience with LEO in my line of work has been very underwhelming bordering on laziness. Sheriff and their deputies are better. But even still you dont experience real law enforcement until you engage with the FBI or Secret Service.
Where I live, I have never encountered the lazy stereotype. The ones I've met or talked to seemed pretty professional and courteous. I got a warning ticket taking my daughter to school a couple yrs ago, and the guy who pulled me over was almost apologizing for pulling me over. lol

But I grew up in a time where cops could be abusive on a whim. Stories of kids getting punched in the mouth during a stop. Bullies in uniform. And the off-duty cops in Jackson, MS when I was working retail....they would troll J C Penney's for young girls to pull over and try to date. Most of them were married.

I'm old enough to remember when cops would pull you over, realize you're a bit tipsy and follow you home to make sure you got there safely rather than soaking you for thousands of dollars. Protect and serve, indeed. (Not that I'm promoting drinking and driving. This is a terrible idea and it was back then as well.)

No longer on the fence - give him the chair........

Better yet - he goes into Gen-pop.....knowing he shot the dog will seal his fate........

Only days after a gunman shot and killed Minnesota state lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, the family’s rescue dog Gilbert had to be euthanized.

Vance Boelter allegedly shot Gilbert, the family’s golden retriever, during the attack at the Brooklyn Park home.

Fellow Minnesota House Rep. Erin Koegel commented on social media platform X that he was put down following the murder.

"Her children had to put down him after learning their parents had been murdered. Gilbert wasn't going to survive. Melissa loved that dog. She trained him as a service dog. He flunked out of school and she was so happy he failed so he could stay! She needed him in heaven with her," Koegel said.

How I survived my teens and 20s without a DUI or killing somebody. I think I had an angel on my shoulder.

My buddy (Randy, otherwise known as the late, great Valujet here on Tidefans) and Iwent out drinking one night. Our usual - buy a fifth and split it while driving around. We were in our college years and carelsss. He called me the next morning, and I was really hungover, telling me that he got pulled over while driving home and spent the night in jail.

On another occasion, a county cop pulled me over while I was in high school. He caught me taking a swig off a 32 oz Budweiser while I was driving thru town. He didn't have jurisdiction so he had to call the local police.

As luck would have it, the detective on duty had played football with my older brother when they were in high school. He recognized me. He told me that he would give me the breathalizer test, but the machine was acting up, giving me a wink and a grin. We spent the next 4-5 hours in the police station talking about SEC football, girls, rock bands.

After about 4 or 5 hours, he said that the machine was working. My test was negative. The county cops showed up about the time I was released from the police station, and they were teed off. "He was drunk!! I know he was!!"

Now that I look back, I was underage. I had a fake ID all thru high school. So I must have been 16 or so. Now, I would have gotten a minor-in-possesion, DUI, etc. And they didn't bother to check the contents of the Skoal container that was full of twigs and seeds, :D

It definitely helps to know the right people. I got pinched one time and was allowed to skip, not because I knew the officer all that well, but he knew my father. (And he also knew that my dad would have kicked my ass to Cuba, swam over there, and kicked it back to the states.) He made it clear that he had better not ever catch me again or he would drive me straight home to my dad and tell him what I did. I would have rather been taken to jail, so I took his threat very seriously.

This brought back a memory. About 30 years ago, my wife and I took two friends over to Polk Cty. TN, to climb Big Frog mountain. I borrowed a friend's Tahoe. We tried for the upper trailhead and the FS road was really rough. The vehicle had been fitted out for towing and the crankcase had an additional oil cooler mounted underneath. Bottomline, it didn't have much clearance and wasn't the vehicle for that road. I holed the cooler and the oil all leaked and engine seized. It was a Sunday, but a FS ranger called Cleveland, TN and arranged for a tow for us.

I ended up having to ride up front with the driver. He was a character. He was a long-haul trucker and was helping out his twin brother's business on weekends. Fast forward about five years, and I and my wife were pulling our popup camper through little Etowah, TN, north of Cleveland and I saw blue lights behind me. It was a known speed trap. I pulled over and the officer was my tow driver - or his twin brother. I decided to take a chance and stuck out my hand and said "You don't remember me, do you?" He said "I can't rightly say as I do." i started reminding him and I had the right twin. I asked how he ended up on the wrong side of the law. We talked about 10 minutes. He let me go with a warning. My wife commented "I can't believe your luck!"

Now, the really funny part was that, when we'd towed the truck down, everything was closed, since it was Sunday, so I'd have to drop the Tahoe at a mechanic's and we'd already called for emergency transportation. When we reached the sheriff's office, I had him stop, because I wanted to go in and make them aware of the vehicle outside the shop's fence, in hopes of maybe preventing theft of the catalytic converter. He had me go in alone. I asked him why he didn't want to go in. He said "Let's just say they know me a little too well in there." So, he had gone from not wanting to even enter sheriff's office to being the town cop in a little town a few miles away... :)

I’m the same on the others with the death penalty. Don’t really support it but if an actual killer goes down I’m not losing sleep over it. If this guy agrees to plead guilty in exchange for a life without parole sentence that’s fine with me. I have no problem if he spends the rest of his life in scenic Florence, Colorado.
