I appreciate the analysis. I was unaware that, if overloaded (one lineman to block two pass rushers, one of whom is a DB blitzing) the lineman's task was to block the man closest to the QB (normally the lineman).
That makes sense. Even though the DB may be faster than the down lineman, block the down lineman and let physics and geomoetry take care of the DB.
If a DB is 1.5 times faster than a down lineman, but has twice as far to go, the lineman is the more immediate threat, so block him.

The bog issue is that the QB has to recognize that an unblocked rusher is coming and get rid of the ball fast. Venables is particularly skilled at disguising blitzers.
