How will Coach Meyer taking a leave of absence affect his eligiblity as a recuiter? There is no doubt that even on the LOA he will still be considered a representative of UF, but in what capacity? Will he still be considered a member of the coaching staff or be more in the role of booster?

I have my own thoughts and opinions on this, but would really like to hear from someone that is more familiar with the NCAA rules on the subject.

He can't recruit unless he is an active, on the field, coach. He couldn't recruit while being on LOA...

I wonder if UF could work in a clause that says he could indeed be active in a recruiting role. I really don't understand the whole LOA thing anyway. It just sounds like he's preparing the world for his departure after seeing the response to his immediate retirement earlier. Don't want to hijack this thread since we have another one on Meyer already.

I do wonder though if he will be able to do many of his head coaching things during the off-season and then reevaluate things after the Spring game.

Only a head coach, or position coach can recruit for a program. If he's away from the program, and not doing coaching duties, he's not part of the staff, at least that's my understanding.

First let me say that I hope Coach Meyer is not terribly ill and that he will be able to cope with his problems......

However, cannot anyone besides me see what happened in 24 hours after he said he was leaving UF football to take care of his family and self???

Obviously, the university had him change his "status" from leaving permanently to "leave of absence".....

I think the staff will use this category to either keep or lure the recruits with LOIs so they will not abandon UF and seek other places where the coach indeed will be active within the system in which they are playing.

I hope I am wrong; but seeing the big change seems really, really strange whereas a little over 24 hours ago Coach Meyer was gone until further notice.

Anyone else see this "out" that perhaps the AD at Florida got Coach Meyer to do vs leaving??

Regardless, if one is ill and getting sicker occurs if you stay active in football, I do hope Coach Meyer chooses the one that will eventually really, really help aleviate his problems and not just keep their recruits safe and sound within the orange and blue!!!

Whether he can recruit or not, they will still get good athletes. There's just so much talent down there that it's almost impossible for them to have a lousy recruiting year, especially given their inherent brand name appeal.

We're seeing an example of this ability of a team's innate appeal today with our 09 seniors. We still had good football players choosing Alabama in spite of Shula and our situation. Our problem was that most of them weren't being developed under him.

Remember what Bear (I think it was Bear that said it), he could take his and beat you or take "yurn" and beat you too!!!!

Coach Saban and his assistants aren't just figure-heads, they are true coaches who take interest and see that talent is truly developed!

It's JMO but to me, it's just a play on words. CUM has said from the first interview that he would still be associated with UF in some capacity therefore I believe he would be on LOA and not terminated. They can save on paperwork and he is still with UF, just a position change is all. They can rapidly change him back to head coach if they want!:cool2:

I can imagine some SEC coaches monitoring any contact UM might have with any recruits during this period. I wonder if the "They called me" excuse works in this case?

I believe that Bum Phillips was hired by CPB as a coach at TA&M from the high school ranks, I don't think Bum played for CPB. Also, I always heard the quote was from Jake Gaithers, the longtime coach at Fla A&M.

I believe you're on to something, Vegas. Just don't make much sense that he would change his mind from out-right quitting to taking a LOA within a matter of hours. It does seem very possible (likely) that Foley swayed him into saying "let's do it this way with an LOA so as not to screw up recruiting". And another thing. If his problem is all stress related and not a problem with his heart that would require surgery, what good will a LOA do in the long run? When (if) he comes back, he'll still have stress-related problems. I mean, there's no surgery to remedy stress. Don't get me wrong. I hope the best for CUM. He's a great coach and the SEC needs coaches like him. But I think this LOA could be a damage control ploy.

Yeah, Bum Phillips gets a lot of credit for that quote, but it was attributed to Jake Gaither much earlier.
