guys... it really sounds ridiculous the way people are floundering over this guy or that guy with this name or that name. it doesn't matter whether the guy is an offensive of defensive genius. sure, he needs to understand football well enough to be the coach, but the most important attribute a head coach at Alabama has to have is the ability to spot BS when he sees/smells it.
when the running game took a bad turn this year, a good head coach would call out whoever was responsible for that part of the scheme and say "hey this must be fixed" if said problem doesn't get fixed, that guy is gone at the end of the year, but the head coach remains. the head coach need not be directly involved with the fixing of the running game other than saying to the responsible assistants, "GET IT DONE!"
we need a good CEO type of character. it doesn't have to be some famous coach or a coach of the year.
an HC with average football knowledge is fine as long as he possesses the ability to look at another coach across the table and say "you're full of it and the offense looks like crap" or "what the heck were you thinking when you ran the ball up the middle three times in a row when all we needed was one or two first downs to seal the game, we lost because of you!" or "is it true that our best linebacker was out partying all night before the game? oh yeah, well i'm holding YOU personally responsible Coach Blank. The next time I hear about something like this, you're getting a pay cut and i'm pulling your Christmas bonus"
we don't need a spurrier or saban. we need a person with the resolve of a Gene Stallings or Bill Parcells or Joe Pa though they may not have the coaching credentials or track record to match those three. that type of "character" is what is needed at HC at Alabama.
Let's not get to carried away with W-L records or whether so and so's offense only averaged 24 points. Alabama can win a lot of football games with an average head coach.
Roll Tide.
