What in the heck was Lee Corso doing??

I just watched the LSU game again, and I saw something shocking that I missed on Saturday: On JPW's TD run that was called back, Lee Corso jumped out of the sideline croud and was yelling at the sideline referee that was watching the pylon. The ref was trying to make the TD call, and Corso was yelling and pointing back upfield, seemingly voicing his opinion that JP had stepped out of bounds. A guy wearing an "Event Staff" shirt (who was apparently the "get back coach" for people with sideline passes) said something to Corso and pointed toward the fence like, "Get back over here where you belong."

I watched this several times, as I really couldn't believe what I was seeing. Apparently, not only does ESPN have some agenda in their broadcasts, but they also have analysts attempting to officiate the games!!

I just looked at it, and I'm not sure I see what you see. For Corso to have said anything the ref could have heard he would have had to have been yelling pretty loudly. It didn't look to me at all like he was yelling. And the point wasn't that much of a point. It looked to me like we was saying something to someone behind him, like maybe saying 'there's a flag back there' or something like that.

I didn't see it the way it was described at all. It looked to me like he "briskly" walked towards the sideline and motioned towards the sideline but that was about it. I certainly didn't see any yelling or pointing.

I am at a disadvantage. I was only watching the play. My neighbor Jack who is an LSU fan stated if that play were in Bryant Denny it was a no call. Jack also agrees if that were a hold then no game will ever end due to the yellow flags flying. No one in the SEC is addressing the performace of the officials. Back to Corso. Does anyone have that segment? :BigA:

You know, the thing is, why was he that close to the playing surface anyways? I know that they have field passes and they are allowed on the sideline, but to walk towards the playing field before a ruling had been made, on the play, is suspect to me. I'm not sure it went down like originally described, but I definitely feel like there is an agenda against the Tide. Those jack-nuts are constantly throwing stones at us! RTR!

Allow me to amend my description of the event, as I read my original post now, I might have been a little overzealous in my account:

Here are the facts, as I see them:

Lee Corso moves toward the official, toward the field of play, during the course of the official making the call. Corso does NOT appear to be irate or emotional, but he is obviously trying to communicate to the ref. In that environment, I would say it is a safe bet that Corso was not using a normal tone of voice.

As he is talking, Corso gestures back upfield. From that perspective in the endzone, considering the distance and angle from the original line of scrimmage, I seriously doubt Corso had seen Smitty's hold or the flag thrown. I made the assumption that he was discussing JPW staying in bounds, as that would be the only action on the field that Corso would have a good view of.

To be fair, Corso says whatever he says, and then seems to realize at that moment that he is out of place. He immediately turns to rejoin the rest of the sideline crowd. It was at this point that the security guy appears to say something to him. I did not intend to imply that security had to pull Corso off the referee, or anything like that.

It don't matter if he stepped out or not the TD got called back anyway!!!

As for Lee I don't like him so I don't pay that much attention to him. ROLL TIDE ROLL!

On the replay, it really did appear to be a very minor, quick event of no real consequence. He may have been pointing at the pylon (which JPW had just touched on the inside portion with the ball, I believe), but again, it was so quick that it really didn't mean anything...

I would have loved seeing JPW run Lee right over and say, "sorry, but you don't belong here"! That would have been the last time Corso sticks his nose where it doesn't belong.

For what it's worth, Finebaum said yesterday that he was standing 10 feet away from Corso when he did this. He said he couldn't believe Corso did it. Thought it was over the top and weird.

Now I must go do penance for listening to Finebaum.

After watching the replay on YouTube, it really looks more like Corso was trying to signal to the ref that JPW had actually MADE the TD. It looks like he points toward the pylon as if to show that the ball had crossed and it was a TD. JMO anyway...

It wouldn't matter if Corso were telling the ref his shoe is untied. The point is that Corso has no business in the ref's ear while he's in the course of making a call. Not to mention it's late in the 4th quarter of a tie ball game with an undefeated season on the line.

And, I'm not saying that Corso shouldn't have an opinion about what happened on the play. If he wants to yell with the other 93,000 people, let him yell. He crossed the line when he used his position to try to influence WHAT call the ref was going to make.
