Question: What Is Our Biggest Problem On Offense?

I really think it goes back to when the portal first opened. There is no reason for a national championship contending team to not have a proven QB on the roster. CTR would look better if he was able to use the full playbook. The Oline would look better with a QB that was more decisive. The WR’s would look much more explosive if they could run routes on all levels. The RB’s would would see more room to run and maybe even catch the ball out of the backfield once in a while with a QB that has touch.

It is what it is, this is the our team this year. I do feel JM is the QB best suited to lead this team and he’s doing about as well as can be expected. CNS chose the hard way this year but we can definitely still finish on top in the end.

I don't know how we know this. It isn't like we have seen anyone else. Sure we saw Buchner and Simpson a little, but facts are we probably will not see any of the other guys unless JM goes down to injury. Based on what we have seen, or what we will see going forward...I guess JM is best suited. Kind of like when Bryce was there. JM didn't get many opps until that Arkansas game where Bryce injured his shoulder.

1) Proctor is young, inexperienced, and perhaps overweight but I think that he gets too much blame.

2) I have been quite critical of Milroe. He holds the ball too long and takes too long to make decisions.Still, I now think that he gets TOO much blame.

That leads me to what I now think the biggest problem is.....Rees at OC. I don't think that he does a good enough job of calling plays that suit Milroe's skillset and the same applies to the rest of the offense. I made my bucket list trip to Tuscaloosa to see the Arkansas game. There were receivers (and perhaps even more RBs) open all over the place. Milroe (who had numerous opportunities to run through big gaps) stands in the pocket too long. He should be throwing some quick outs. I HATE when he lobs passes to the sideline that increase the chance of an interception. I would like to see Milroe run some wildcat plays.

If Lane or Sark was the OC, we would have put up 40 or 50 points against the hogs. Even BOB would be doing a better job imo.

Oh and fwiw, our defense is spectacular, FAR better than last season in all 3 phases and deeper.

Sorry for the rant; I'm still a bit wound up from the trip, and thanks to the people of the State of Alabama for the great time and unforgettable hospitality! The above is jmo.

It depends who you talk to, but I think you could say that about Rees as well. Rees looks like a genius when things are clicking. When you compare things to the way BoB was calling plays for Milroe, it's a night and day difference. I honestly think Rees is pretty limited by the QB and Oline play. If you have a QB that can't hit the short stuff, then it's gonna make the playcalling seem a little wonky if Milroe connects on some of those throws he misses, Rees looks like a genius.

That’s one in 6 games for him this year it’s an outlier at this point.

He honestly did not hold the ball that long on his sacks against USF for the most part. He had two throw aways in a half against USF I’ve counted 4-5 all year from milroe. Seems like something that’s not that good of a stat but being able to just throw the ball away when the play is not there is underrated. Ty was 5/9 figure in two throw aways and a drop and Ty only missed on one pass. Sure it’s a small sample size being half a game. He really only had two sack I would say was his fault he needed to get rid of the ball or run. The other three was 1.Seth got blown up at the snap 2. Proctor let an edge guy beat him without touching him 3. Jace gave one of the worst effort blocks by a Saban starting rb and the guy essentially walked through untouched. Milroe has taken these same sacks all year so he’s not an improvement in this area.

I’ll say right now Ty has some issues that need to be worked on and pocket awareness is at the top but he is a more polished passer and after a couple games of experience I think Ty could’ve had our offense seen as a true threat and not anemic like it is now.

I think the team got behind milroe and Saban picked the guy the team would play harder for. I think Bookers comment about milroe being a lineman’s kind of QB kinda points to that. I guess that is ultimately Ty’s fault he couldn’t win the team over.
100% disagree with you, but that's fine. If it was going to be better with TS, he would be playing right now. We can all have our opinions. I just want someone that can get it done.

I agree. I am curious, though.... We obviously still have a ways to go, but does that change if we find ourselves in a Hurts-Tua situation in an SEC Championship or playoff game? I'd like to think that if a championship were on the line, we'd do whatever it takes to win, but the way this QB battle has gone, I'm not so sure. If everything falls right, we are capable of making it that far with the QB we have, but at some point, we are going to need him to start hitting the short and intermediate stuff in order to win

That’s fine disagreement are bound to happen everyone has different opinions. That’s like saying if the offense would’ve been better under Tua he would’ve started from the beginning of the year instead of half time in the NC. That’s not to say Ty is Tua because I don’t believe that but it just shows that the best guy doesn’t always start for what ever the reason.

Pre-snap penalties have been insane this year for us. We got a pre-snap penalty in the victory formation. Have you ever in your life seen that other than this one time?

I don't recall it.
I'm sure it has happened to someone, but I honestly don't remember ever seeing that one.

Oh yeah you are correct Sir. I don't feel good about this QB thing. I think we lose 3 QBs after the season. I don't imagine those young fellas are feeling valued. Especially since JM is a Sophomore. Simpson needs to play every now and then. Is what it is. Doesn't seem different from most schools in the SEC. Their backups never seem to get snaps either.

I agree about needing someone to get it done, but I don't think Any QB could have pulled it off behind these guys at that time. I cannot recall having so many OL issues on all my years of watching Bama football. And right now? We are suspect at LT with a right handed QB. Gap problems early but looks like that is improved. But no doubt LT is a gimpy spot along this line. Not the 1st time Bama started a Freshman at LT. We will see. CNS must be of the opinion that coaching is the issue.....well. he would know.

Milroe.
Holds the ball too long.
Too slow going thru progressions.
Milroe backs out of the Pocket, when he should step up.
Milroe Runs when he has open Receivers.
Milroe has a good long ball, but can't throw Short or mid range.

Let me use a bad analogy. Leaving the dock with a boat that has a bad leak. By the time we get to mid season, you wonder if we can make it, or will we sink.
It's now too late to return to the dock and try another boat.
Our only option is to gut it out and hope we can make it.

Trivia... The Titanic sank in water about 12,500 foot deep.
(I know other useless facts too. :) )
Well. If you forgot to put the plug in your boat, you just need to run flat out and keep moving, and you’ll keep the water out. So that’s all we gots to do…😉

Just curious.... did these stats point anything at Milroe for the self inflicted sacks. He many times has he sacked himself?
It was 12/31 (38.7%) for QB or free blitz which would still indicate a hot route is open.
12/31 (38.7%)for LT I think is was something like 8 sacks proctor has gave up. I could be off on proctors number but I know LT is for sure 12.

Everyone is overthinking it: The 'problem' on offense mostly revolves around
the players not being nearly as good as they have been in the past. That includes at QB, many positions on the offensive line, wide reciever, and running back(but I'd argue that the drop off in rb is the least important amongst these)

We're used to bama having multiple first round draft picks on offense starting each year.....some years it has been something ridiculous like 4+. this year Bama doesn't have that. ... Or anything close to that.

for all the talk about the portal, the best teams still build through HS recruiting and add through the portal. Same is done in the NFL. Build through the draft, add through free agency. Most of the guys in the portal left their team for a reason and that reason isn’t good, IMO. only a few left for a new experience .

There are multiple first round picks on this year’s offense.funny thing, some on here wanted Javion Cohen gone. Now he is a projected late first pick / early second pick for Miami.

Yeah and when I watched a game of their's about a week or two ago they were talking about how much better their OL was and he was a key piece. Ugh.

Sounds like a coaching/development problem to me.

You raise a great point. I am admittedly spoiled by the great QBs and OCs of the past. I just feel like Rees could call some quick passes to RBs and WRs in the flat, and even call a few wildcat plays (which really suit Milroe imo).
The OL has some problems but I think that the team, aside from the quarterback is better and deeper than last year, despite losing Will and Bryce.
I suppose that we will find out today.
