My freshman year, spring of 1971, when we were a coming team. Played UT on a Saturday afternoon, and ran them down in the second half. Had the game won until some idiot in the stands sent a second round of incoming -- oranges -- at the Tennessee bench. UT gets a technical free throw to tie the score with only seconds remaining. Glenn Garrett steals the ball after the jump, but misses two free throws standing out on the line by himself. Somehow we win in overtime and the oranges come flying again. I remember Ray Mears and Stu Abernathy kicking at them as they skidded by.
Then, on Monday night, Rupp's last Kentucky team rolled in, and we were down double-digits in a blink. But we never stopped coming -- I don't think there was a single butt in a seat in for the entire second half -- and we won that one, too.
This was the weekend that Alabama basketball under C.M. Newton announced its presence to the world -- with two of the best games I have ever seen. Still gives me chills.
