What type of gadget plays do you expect from the barn?

Well, I would say the misdirection, fake reverse, end-around play but they use it so much it's hardly a gadget - more like a key cog in their offensive philosophy.

If I were special teams coach, I would definitely have my "hands team" in and ready for every single kickoff. We may sacrifice some return yardage, but I would not want to give up another onsides kick to them.

Gotta be ready for the Kodi Burns at QB package, and let's hope someone covers Newton when he's split out wide.

I would be willing to bet they have some new plays that no one has ever seen before also.

If we let them do the onsides kick again this year, we deserve to lose! Don't have to have the hands group in either...just put #4 as the center man on the return team and attack the kicker as soon as its kicked.

i'm sure they've been seen before, we were just so busy counting 10 mississippi that we didn't pay attention to them. and that was a long time ago ;)

i bet they try the one where they have the guy squatting behind the line trying to hide.

what im hoping beyond hope is that we catch their first gimmick much like we did with UFs first play in the SECCG game last year where anders snuffed out their little TE play.

maybe dareus blows through the line and hits mccaleb full speed much like he did against ole miss last year

definitely that onside kick and a few reverses but i think they gonna just use the cam read play like they have all year!!!...they really only have 4 plays cam read, cam fake read, cam power, and cam play action read...all the BS "gadget" plays are just there to make you forget bout the read play!!

Anybody playing Alabama should have a play to take advantage of the maximum pressure against punt formation. LSU for example simply checked out of the punt into the play when they saw 10 men on the line of scrimmage. That was a little embarassing.

More important question is what kind of trick plays do we have for the Barn...We have been as vanilla as all get out. Time to have some trickeration and fake the Barn out of their shoes for a change. We are as predictable as Day = light, Night = dark.

If we man up we won't need trick plays. I still have nightmares about that fake punt against Texas in the BCSNCG. The only trick play we've done successfully in recent years is the Wildcat handoff to the QB for a TD pass to Julio against Arky last year. We've also sucked at 2 pt conversions since I can remember.

Remember that Malzahn doesn't call these plays gadget plays, but they are just a part of their normal offense. I hope that they do try a number of reverses, double passes, Statue of Liberty, onside kicks, fake punts as part of their "normal offense". Because if we are expecting these gadget plays, then they can blow up in their faces allowing for big yardage losses and field reversals.

There's certainly nothing wrong with a few surprises and, I agree, we sure haven't tried much this year.

They key is doing things that are higher percentage for success. That pass against TX was woefully underthrown and shouldn't have even been throw. PJ should have just punted it when he saw the coverage. Even at that, a punter throwing a 30 yard pass isn't high percentage. I think "trick plays" can compliment a power team like Bama if they are run at the right times and especially when the pecentage for success seems higher. For instance, I've been waiting all year to see AJ take the snap on the fg and fake the hold and then reverse pivot and roll to his right for a high percentage pass to convert a first down or more.

Their entire offense is a gadget play. That's why its so hard to defend. We play a more traditional style of football.

it'll be just like last year. they'll throw in everything Including the kitchen sink! IMO, Bama Can't get behind more than 7 pts. best case, not being behind at all.

Am I the only one getting the sense that Bama has prepared for this matchup much the same way they did last year against Florida? I just get this feeling that AU may be in for a very rude awakening. Also, you don't win championships with a 60th rated defense PERIOD.

yup, and i think the barn will be just as overconfident in their awesomeness as the reptiles were last year.

Well, I guess it is this Malzahn guy who is behind the offensive philosophy under this Chizik regime, but whatever, or whoever, they certainly seem to understand the concept of keeping you off balance.

I watched Auburn play a couple of weeks ago, I believe it was, and I was expecting to see Cam Newton run the ball. Instead, he was passing it, and Dyer and McCaleb were providing the fireworks.

Baseball pitchers have known this principle since 1900 or before. In the fifties the New York Giants had a pitcher named Sal ("The Barber") Maglie. He was known as "the Barber" for an obvious reason -- "chin music." He caught you leaning over the plate, you got some "chin music."

You start 'loading the box' on this Auburn team, and Newton starts passing the football. You start chasing him around to the right, here comes Dyer around to the left.

Someone on here has correctly said, we must maintain our 'gap coverage.' We also need to stay low, keep our feet wide apart, and not get caught too high and off balance.

My 12th grade year (1959) at Graceville, Florida, we played Slocomb, Alabama, when they had Robert ("Humpy") Cox, who would go on to Troy State on a scholarship. Robert Cox was just about like Marlin Dyess of Elba, Alabama, who was 5' 5", 140 lbs., and played on Bear Bryant's first Alabama team in 1958. Robert Cox could fly, just like Marlin Dyess could.

Towards the end of the game, I believe it may have been 7-7, and they pitched out to the left. From my left safety (we didn't have cornerbacks, per se), I was sucked all the way into their backfield over to their left, as was the rest of our team. All of a sudden, here comes Cox, who must have been flanked out to their left, on a reverse around their right end. He went for about seventy yards, and they beat us on that TD.

I will forevermore believe that if I had maintained my 'lane,' my 'gap,' and stayed home to our left, Slocomb would not have beaten us that night. I over-pursued.
