What's a "cornball brother?"

Say What?

Robert Griffin III is arguably the most popular man in Washington right now. The Redskins’ spectacular rookie quarterback has been winning games, fans, and headlines due to his play this season. Today, he was on the front page of the Washington Post for the third time in a week and a half.

Under increasing media scrutiny, Griffin has been clear he does not want to be defined by his race. In a news conference yesterday cited in USA Today, Griffin, an African-American, said, “For me, you don’t ever want to be defined by the color of your skin. You want to be defined by your work ethic, the person that you are, your character, your personality. That’s what I’ve tried to go out and do.” He continued, “I am an African-American in America. That will never change. But I don’t have to be defined by that.’’

But columnist and ESPN analyst Rob Parker evidently thinks otherwise. On the network’s First Take show this morning, Parker said, “my question, which is just a straight honest question, is [Griffin] a brother, or is he a cornball brother?”

I think RG3 just picked up a new legion of fans.

I'd still like to know what a "cornball brother" is.

Another shining example of ESPN's hilariously horrible "Embrace Debate" doctrine.

Naturally... pretty much everyone has raked ESPN over the coals for letting Parker, who has a history of doing things like this, carry it out again.

Bamaro has it right about the Uncle Tom thing.

http://washington.cbslocal.com/2012...o-white-fiancee-possible-republican-leanings/

Rob Parker, a contributor for ESPN’s “First Take” morning show, questioned Griffin’s standing as a black man, asking whether the quarterback was a “cornball brother,” and later saying that the black quarterback is “not one of us.”

“He’s black, he kind of does his thing, but he’s not really down with the cause; he’s not one of us,” Parker said this morning. “He’s kind of black, but he’s not really the kind of guy you want to hang out with cause he’s off to something else.”

During the “First Take” segment, Parker pointed out Griffin’s engagement to his white fiancée, Rebecca Liddicoat. Parker also speculated that the Redskins quarterback might be a Republican, but that Griffin’s braids added to the “authenticity” of being black.

Seriously though, like RG3, I'd rather be defined by who I am, not by my skin color. This is 2012, not 1970, we are still on this crap.

I'm thinking that whatever a cornball brother is, is probably what Parker is. What kind of brother gone call somebody a cornball? Probably a cornball.

Cornball meant goofy when I was a kid. About 60 years ago.

And it's coming out that Parker has now been suspended by ESPN.
I don't understand why sports announcers want to get all high and mighty on the social commentary but a lot of them seem to take those liberties. And it's usually talking down at the rest of us who tune in to get away from the issues of the social ills they're trying to address.

As for RG3, it appears he's finding out that when you are in the spotlight, you can do nothing right as there's going to be some announcer taking shots at you.

Why couldn't this announcer discuss his ability and performance to date instead of defining him on expectations of where he should land socially and politically? Is that really any of his business?

Should be fired. I don't think ESPN has the stones to do that though; they're worried about looking racist I guess. When they didn't do anything with Stephen A Smith, they lost a lot of credibility imho.

Can someone clue me in to what "cause" Parker is referring to? Is RGIII supposed to be supporting some racially-motivated cause? I'm confused...
