Where does Bama go from here...do we find answers?

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

I think we will compete for the West title and have as good a shot as any to win it. The SEC looks down this year from what I have seen except for maybe Florida. I think we will get better as the season goes along and if we catch fire down the stretch could make the sweet 16. We need some playmakers to evovle and soon. Felix and Gee have the best chance In my opinion. If they do then the pressure will be lightened for Davis and he will become more of a force. Steele worries me with his injury and he may be the key to the whole season. He needs some help badly and if Holinger can give him some rest and time to heal then that late season burst could happen.

For some reason we either start out on fire and then cool off at the end of the year or we start out slow and finish strong at the end of the year. I guess we will be contenders then before the season is over who knows?

Core Problem is Guards

We have only one true guard, and that's Steele. And he's not at 100%.

This will plague us all year, even if Steele's back gets better.

What we have here is an intractable problem, at least for this season.

Does anyone know if there has been any thought to moving Steele to the #2 spot and letting Hollinger take over as PG? Hollinger has not looked too bad this year and could develop with a little playing time.

This will be a down year, and the team will need our support more than ever...

I agree with this statement. However, I don't understand the lack of depth. CMG has proven he can recruit, but to allow yourself to get the shallow is inexcusable, IMO. He knew who was graduating & that Kennedy would probably be leaving, if he didn't know, he knew it was a possibility. It makes no sense to me that you leave yourself no back-up plan after 3 HUGELY successful years & having the program on the verge of something special only to bring it crashing back down to the mediocre level by not being prepared. Had CMG gotten one pure shooter & one more big man, we would not be in this situation. Bench is everything. Other than UNC last year, who was the last team to be ultra successful without a good bench? It makes a world of difference.
I will ALWAYS stand behind Crimson Tide athletics, but some things just don't make sense to me.

10 players on scholarship

Wasn't this stuff covered in the 10 player on scholarship thread?

Go back to last years games against MSU that we won 94-47. We had the starters in the game until late instead of giving the backups an opportunity to get some experience. Is it any wonder that so many guys transferred to different schools? This has been a problem with CMG almost from day 1 in that he doesn't give the young guys much playing time.

I disagree. I see the point completely. 1 of those transfers was a walk-on. Shawn Taylor, probably, saw the writing on the wall when RH and YC signed last November. Glenn Miles and Albert Weber weren't patient enough to bide their time for pt. They would be playing this year. Its hard to get them in the lineup w/ ES, KW, and RS playing the guard positions.

I don't see how it is CMG's fault that a player didn't graduate with their AA degree. He could have been ok going into his final semester. We don't know exactly what happened.

The transfer argument was debated to the point of exhaustion last year.

The "point" is that every school in America has players that transfer for numerous reasons. Even Duke and N. Carolina have players transfer.

There are many problems with this team, but the most obvious is the lack of a 2 guard. That problem cannot be fixed during the course of the season.

The other glaring weakness is the perimeter defense. If you still have 4 fouls to give with under 2 mins left then it should be blatantly obvious that you aren't playing aggressively enough on defense. This is becoming an ongoing problem so I will venture to say there will be no solution to this either.

And whoever said we can make the Sweet 16 is watching a different team than I am.

Steele doesn't have the outside shot to be a 2 guard.

I just dont understand why bama starts out every big game like they are in slow motion. For the Notre Dame, NC state, and Memphis games bama always starts out of the gate down by 10 or more. I just dont understand that, how do you come out and play like that to start a big game. And another gripe is defense, everybody has a stinkin career game against bama, because they dont guard anyone. Defense is effort and I think this team lacks it a little bit.

I agree! Our problem is guarding on the perimeter. We let everyone and their brother pop threes all night! If (and everyone knows about ifs) Winston was still here we would have that outside game and someone to take that important shot!!!!!!!!!!

We are not physical enough

Lat night was my first time to see the team in person and I came away with the impression that we just are not physical enough in our defense. We were only called for 11 fouls for the entire game and 4 of those came in the last minute when we had to foul them so they could get in the bonus and start shooting free throws. Chuck Davis picked up his first foul with just under three minutes left in the game. Jamereo never did pick up a foul. Our two big men played 35 plus minutes each and only had 2 fouls between them. We act like we are scared to actually put someone on their back when they drive the lane. With the type of team we have this year- good size on the front line and no perimeter shooting-we need to pound the ball down low offensively and play in your face intimidating defense. What is also getting to be a continuing problem with a Gottfried coached team is the poor perimeter defense. Seems like every game we give up a ton of three pointers and alot of those are on wide open shots. I just do not see us getting to the NCAA tourney this year, I may be wrong but I just do not see it.

I'm always puzzled...

by posts like this. After re-reading your post a couple of times, how would more fouls on the part of David and Davidson remedy the perimeter defense problem?

Haven't actually seen a game yet (OK will be my first game that I see!), but I guess the logic of the post is maybe that we aren't playing agressive enough? You don't need to foul in order to show that you play aggressive defense. If you play hard defense you cause the other team to make mistakes. If you overplay you will get burnt.

The fact remains...

that we didn't get hurt that badly on the inside, hence it does not compute to criticize the big men. They're playing much smarter this year, and, let's face it, we had the home court. I'm much more worried about our perimeter defense. There, the old rule of never fouling a jump-shooter swings into action. IOW, when you're beaten - you're beaten; end of story. If you're a step slow getting there - and we are - picking up a foul to make the situation worse is just, well, senseless. We are playing decent, not outstanding, but decent, inside defense. Perimeter is a different story...
