Just taking the top three teams in each Conference.

SEC- Bama, Georgia, LSU/Florida......Vs. all other Conferences

PAC 12...Big 12....

I just dont see how everyone is saying the SEC right now is all about Bama. Next season there may just be another SEC/SEC National Title game.

Thoughts on other conferences challenging for top spot with theit best top three???

Until I see him royally screw up a football game, I'd say A&M has a chance to be #3 with Manziel at QB.

Even not counting us, no other conference can even come close to A&M, LSU, UGA, Florida and USCe.

And even Vandy no longer sucks. :p_big: +

It's really hard to know which teams will be the top 3 in the league next year. I don't think other leagues have that problem. To me Bama, A&M, UGA, USC, and UF could all fall somewhere in the top 3.

I wouldn't be too quick to count out LSwho and the jury is still out on A&M.
This^^^

LSU and aTm both have serious questions to answer heading into the upcoming season. Love him or hate him as a HC, Les has a track record of answering the questions while the jury is still out on Sumlin at Texas A&M.

To what I think the ops point is. No matter who the top 3 teams in the SEC are this year, they'll all be NC contenders and any two of the other conferences would have a hard time saying that.

What's Virginia's excuse ;) ?
Touche. All I can say is that VT has generally done its part over the last 20 years. ;)

Seriously, I think it's two things. First, the VA schools haven't managed to lock the state down from a recruiting perspective. Even with VT's run since the mid 90s, we routinely see a number of the top in-state kids go to out-of-state schools. And given that we have chosen (wisely, I think) to focus primarily on in-state recruiting, that means that we start each year with a talent deficit compared to the elite programs. Look at it this way, a down recruiting year for you guys means your class was ranked 5th, while a great year for VT means our class was ranked 10th.

Second, while the state of VA produces a significant amount of football talent (ranked 8th last I checked), one thing we don't seem to have is a surplus of is great linemen. Even with all the changes in college football over the last 20+ years, the most dominant teams are still the ones who control the LOS on both sides of the ball. There was a time when VT used to have pretty nasty lines, which were IMO a big part of CFB's early success. But as we've gotten away from that in favor of mobile QBs, better skill-position players, and defensive backs, you've seen us pile up a lot of wins against good teams but struggle against elite competition. If we're going to ever take that proverbial next step and become a consistent top-10 team then IMO it has to start on the lines.

Charlottesville's an odd town. In the city limits, it's "cultural", elitist, and arrogant...... get 10 miles out in any direction and it's Walton's Mountain -- and I'm guessing it should take more of a Stanford approach -- and go after the best Hard-nosed Football-playing, Student/Athletes in the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and the Appalachians.....
