I was reading winners and losers on CBS sports and they had a replay on X of Germie Bernard's game winning catch and run. This may go down as one of the most head shaking plays for SC fans. Notice on the run how a SC defender get close to Bernard and then pulls his arms back and up and then makes the TD sign when Bernard scores. Incredible.

Couldn't agree more...

They had no timeouts left, and would have had to score a TD in response...

Tackle him - whether OOB or not - and make Bama take a chance on kicking a field goal...

No matter what, I think it’s a loser’s play. You either go down fighting, or you miraculously win by fighting tooth and nail. But you don’t just let your opponent score a go ahead touchdown for the win.
Exactly. Besides, their chances would have been much better to try to force a field goal. A missed field goal would have been far more likely than their chances of answering with a tying TD with only 35 seconds left and no time outs.

I think it was the wrong decision but I understand what they’re trying to do by letting us score. It’s no big mystery and nothing to do with gambling or anything else others have mentioned. But I think it’s foolish unless you’re actually trailing and the other team could run the clock out on you.

Why do people keep commenting like this? He was clearly letting him score. He thought the best play was to let him score and get the ball back so that they could score and tie. Not a terrible decision. What are people watching?
Yes, it is a terrible decision. 30 seconds left with no timeouts? It might be one of the dumbest decisions I’ve ever seen.other than one play South Carolina didn’t score quick all day.

Very strange, but it seems to me the player is showing the coaches "I'm doing what you told me to do", I don't read that as him putting his arms up as a TD sign.

I understand that strategy. I have sometimes thought "for times sake", just let them score. They're going to anyway, and will use up the clock. But those situations are rare, and carry risks. It shows no confidence in your tired defense, and no guarantee you come back and score. Even with the additional time left on the clock. Beamer thought, with more time, they could come back and score a touchdown with a 2 point conversion and win. But he only had time for a hail Mary. And those rarely work. It really was a strange bit of strategy.

I can see that if we are only down 7, but down eight with only a minute and a struggling offense like theres, you play defense. You try to stop TD and if not, you've got the possibility of stopping the 2 point conversion for the tied.

The eight point lead was the key IMO to playing defense!

Huh? It was a tie game when they let him score.

It was a “No Mas” move. We were going to score either a short field goal (hope) or TD any way. It was a defensive “Hail Mary”… but imo a dumb move
