For the record, Lanning stood out to me when I was looking things over near the start of the year.
He's used the transfer portal very well, even if I think Dabo wouldn't be the train wreck some thing it would be, I also think the portal wouldn't be his strong suit (nor was it Saban's in my opinion). Lanning seems to be using it effectively and that could be important moving forward.
He's technically, kind of on the Saban tree, if that matters. He at least know how the program is run. He had success with Kirby at Georgia, and one can easily argue Kirby was the second best coach in the game the past few years but it's also based on Saban's system, so there's nothing going on at Alabama that's likely to be foreign to him.
He isn't the proven commodity we'd love, but really the only sure fire home run hire is Kirby Smart and he's not leaving Georgia. So, after that you either look at proven but with a lot of patina on them (Dabo, Jimbo, Meyer) or you go with a young guy like Lanning and hope he knows what he needs to know.
I do not like the Kiffin idea because he's been coaching a long time, he coached at USC, he coached at Tennessee, he's a known commodity but not in the good way some seem to see him as. He might not be Bill Curry, but he's closer to Rich Rod than some want to admit.
Edit: If I'm going to put on my tinfoil hat, there's a slim chance that Saban's choice to leave was tied to the availability of someone like Lanning.
