Who is Saban's replacement?

CNS made it sound like it was a spur of the moment decision. But Byrne knew this was coming at some point - likely within the next year or two. So I'm sure he had a list of potential replacements. But having someone "locked in" to follow CNS is another matter.
Just because he decided late doesn't mean it was an off the cuff, spur of the moment thing. From interviews, it sounds like each year he does an evaluation of whether he should retire or not. That being the case, it seems safe to assume that Byrne would have a list in case the answer came back yes. If lots of people suspected all season that this might be the year, and they did, then Byrne would have surely had that same sense and been prepared for it.

Well I am glad we have Byrne in place to manage this. I like the dude. He may not make the popular hire but I trust him to make the right one.

I think DeBoer wants out. He's losing Penix, his incoming recruiting class is not very good, he's losing his 9 six year guys (who not only contributed on the field but he valued their leadership).

He's been connected to the Seahawks job, he has Sexton as his attorney. He's getting a raise regardless but I think it's a great time to sell high for him. Get out before you start Big 10 play.

I heard someone on sportstalk radio say this on the ride to work. Very similar to Jim Harbaugh and Michigan. Harbaugh is losing 44 seniors and juniors leaving for the draft. If he came back it would be a total rebuild and why in the heck would he do that with the La Chargers sitting there with a franchise quarterback already in place.

That sounds reasonable. It would be impossible to "lock somebody in" prior to Saban''s resignation because situations in the coaching arena are constantly changing.
