Just because he decided late doesn't mean it was an off the cuff, spur of the moment thing. From interviews, it sounds like each year he does an evaluation of whether he should retire or not. That being the case, it seems safe to assume that Byrne would have a list in case the answer came back yes. If lots of people suspected all season that this might be the year, and they did, then Byrne would have surely had that same sense and been prepared for it.CNS made it sound like it was a spur of the moment decision. But Byrne knew this was coming at some point - likely within the next year or two. So I'm sure he had a list of potential replacements. But having someone "locked in" to follow CNS is another matter.
