I still don't think that should've been a red card. It was a fair and clean tackle in its intent. His spikes elevated from contact with the ball; no obvious intent or recklessness there. FIFA needs to learn how to use VAR appropriately or else they will end up de facto removing aggressively clean defense from the game. Maybe that's how they intend to increase scoring...

Intent doesn't really matter when it's a dangerous play. Dangerous play trumps intent. Of course, had he dragged his foot across the ground rather than going in with his leg extended and cleats up, his foot wouldn't have gone over the ball to create the dangerous play. He might have had less of a chance of making contact with the ball, but that's the point. It's each player's responsibility to eliminate dangerous plays from the game.

The good news for Spain is that Nico Williams is apparently back. Without him they haven't been the same offensively. Also FWIW, France has only allowed 2 goals to this point so they aren't far behind defensively while also being well ahead offensively (14 goals to 9). Really France has 16 goals but played one more game so we're ignoring that.

But, this France team is special and different. Olise didn't play for France in the 2022 Euro, now he's one of the best players in the world. He adds almost the perfect piece to Mbappe and Dembele.

Assuming Nico Williams is fit and ready to go then it makes the Spain more dangerous and I like their chances much more. Without him I would not want to be Spain.

Either way I would still be mildly surprised if France doesn't win this thing.

Can't argue with that logic. You are probably dead on. I am pulling for Argentina oddly enough. Messi has been such a good ambassidor for the sport and for the one non-European team left in the tournament to win it all would be awesome to me. But any of the teams left can win this thing. Heck, I even expect Belgium to give the Spanyards all they can handle today.

Based on your response, I did what I should've done in the first place: read the IFAB rules for myself asked ChatGPT if it was a legit red card. Chat agrees with you because:
  • studs exposed,
  • contact high on Jesús Gallardo's shin,
  • significant speed,
  • little ability to control the tackle.

FYI:

Saturday: Norway vs England at 5pm -and- Argentina vs Switzerland at 9pm

The Semi-finals will be next Tuesday, July 14 and Wednesday July 15.

There will be a Third place playoff on Sat July 18 at 5pm.

Then the Finals on Sunday July 19 at 3pm.

Lot of fantastic soccer to be played!
